Unemployment Report: Jobless Numbers Up Across Plainfield, Will County

Although unemployment is down from this time compared to last year, numbers increased from September 2012 to October.

Unemployment rates in Illinois increased slightly from September 2012 to October, but are still down compared to 2011, according to new figures released last week.

Plainfield's unemployment crept up slightly, increasing to 6.9 percent in October compared with 6.5 percent in September. A year ago, the rate was 8.1 percent.

October local unemployment rates fell in every metro area compared to last year, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

In Will County the rate increased to 8.1 percent from 7.7 percent month over month —but dropped more than 1 percent compared with a year ago. In Kendall County unemployment ticked up in October to 7.1 percent from 6.6 percent in September.

"Falling unemployment rates across our state and the lowest October rates since 2008 show that that our steady economic progress continues," IDES Director Jay Rowell said in a news release. "We now look to Congress to address the fiscal cliff. If not resolved, our future economic progress will be in jeopardy."

IDES generally reports unemployment figures for municipalities with populations of 25,000 or more people. The numbers measure unemployment for residents who live in a certain town, not those who work in the town.

Statewide the unemployment rate increased from 8.1 percent in September 2012 to 8.4 percent in October. Compared to October 2011, unemployment in Illinois has dropped 1.2 percent.

The U.S. average unemployment rate was 7.5 percent in October 2012.

Why does Plainfield have such a hard time with attracting business to the Village? There are empty stores all over town. The Village Board needs to bring more business to Plainfield.
Fernando November 27, 2012 at 12:45 pm
That would be nice. More businesses, and please-not another bank-dentist-mexican restaurant-or irish themed restaurant. It's a big world out there!!!!

There are jobs out here...
Miguel Sanchez November 27, 2012 at 02:10 pm
Many spots are empty because the prior businesses failed. That is not attractive.

This is a clear example of Illinois political climate at play here. One party of overwhelming Democrat is proving to work well, keep voting for the same policies that get us further into the hole. Jobs and prosperity meanwhile flee to states like Indiana, and Wisconsin. Look no further than the leadership here in Illinois. I just keep thinking people will open their eyes especially concerning a lost congressional seat due to citizens along with businesses fleeing to greener pastures. Vote Democrat its definitely working!
Olddeegee November 27, 2012 at 03:50 pm
What do you suggest? Also, tax incentives to fill empty stores should be considered.
Ron November 27, 2012 at 04:56 pm
What Democrat has gotten in the way of the Plainfield Village Board? Almost every development is challenged fiercly by the existing Village Board. Perhaps they need to look outside the box and look at what other municipalities are 'actually' doing. The Tea/Republican party in Plainfield feel they have all the answers. Just look at all the empty buildings around town.

Just getting ready to go out jogging and decided to look at my apparel and where its manufactured. Gloves - China; Hanes Hoodie - El Salvador; Shorts - Phillipines; T-shirt - Vietnam; Sweatpants - Indonesia; tightie whities - Honduras; running shoes - China. Let's see....forget being a republican or democrat. Let's concentrate on being an American from the USA. Hmmm.....let's just say that my jogging gear was all manufactured in our country, which would equal more jobs, which would equal more people earning a paycheck, which equals more people with some extra money to spend at small businesses, which means more small businesses could actually make it in downtown plainfield, which means less vacant stores, which means a more prosperous community. Just sayin'......

I love baiting these liberals on the patch; it’s like fish in a barrel! Ron you can repeat the same ill-informed uneducated views a million times but facts are facts. The Federal Executive State is Democrat controlled (Obama) Governor Quinn (D), State Senate (D), State Legislative House (D), and all of Will County (D).
Yes there is so-called old guard RINO (Republican In Name Only) running Plainfield, which has no control on state decisions or bills and income tax rates. Furthermore I don’t work in Plainfield, but I live it and have for the decade of residence here, like more people I know within the community. @ Eyes: As for blaming one party, I do not, Tom Cross leading the minority is a joke of a leader and after his shellacking he should have stepped down to let a conservative leader with a real juxtaposition take over. Alas I digress because Illinois is a problematic state when you’ve got guys like Ron, who would vote for a Dead Dog (D) as long as that “D” is present. So blaming the minority party it’s worked great. Furthermore I’d be willing to bet guys like Ron have never been to a township meeting, or even looked at an alternative news source that doesn’t have Leftist spewing the same tired lines each and every afternoon on MSNBC. Vote Independent Conservative Citizens that have real careers, private experience, and knowledge of the real world. Sorry Ron, go back pretending you know what you’re talking about.

Right, because you would pay $50 for the same pair of pants that costs $10.
If you cared about these things, you would have already bought them. The consumer is a heartless beast when it comes to pricing, including you it seems. It's nice to talk the talk, but when it comes time to walk the walk, you yourself have not followed your own advice of how to get a prosperous community. All of the items you mentioned could have been bought 'made in the USA', yet you didn't buy them - why?

LOL "Heartless Beast!" ROLF!

I never mentioned one thing about the county, state, of federal government, you did. I was simply referring to the Plainfield Village Board which is primarily made up of Republicans. You were the one that has twisted this whole conversation out of context because you are simply protecting your failed conservative principles. The local Village electorate have on numerous recent occasions chased business and development out of the the Village of Plainfield. They wanted to come into the Village to open their businesses. To run a business, you need to hire employees. When Village officials block a business or development from coming into town, it kills local jobs which is what this article is about. Perhaps you should actually take the time to read or ask for help if you have trouble with reading comprehension. Should you need further clarification, feel free to ask Tim who will provide an overwhelming and valid amount of facts to back up my claims.

As a Commissioner, I would have liked to have seen a comparison of the budget that was presented inRead More our Board packets as a draft at a prior meeting compared to the draft that was put on the table before me at the last meeting so that I can see where the cuts took place. Spending down this year's contingency line items is like a sugar rush and will negatively affect the Park District's future. Prior Boards have been carrying over the contingency amounts from year to year in order to deal with unexpected expenses that inevitably come up. Just last week, the Administration Center was without a/c when the four units failed and needed to be replaced. Where did the funds come from to do that work? Its not as if the Board can go out and raise funds in the private market. That's what businesses CAN and should do, but then a park district is not a business. I resent the statements that prior Boards have been acting in a financially irresponsible manner. The Board has been operating a lean operation for many years.

I am just wondering how long this suspense filled soap opera will continue? Bottom line: HurtadoRead More knew his buddy needed a job...so; he and his majority board members made a mockery of local government due process and gave Mr. Peck a job, even though Hurtado voted with the past board to unanimously select an Exec…who is still under a contract. And then decided there was a need to pay a board secretary (who jumped out of the frying pan…smart move) and then appointed someone without pay. And of course there is a need to have a paid political hack to help publicly spin the board’s craziness via press releases.
AlaskaDreaming June 17, 2013 at 12:22 pm
I hate to ask the obvious of Mr. Peck (not that I expect him to answer anyway), but why is thisRead More announcement coming from the Executive Director rather than our newly appointed Director of Communications?
