Village Increases Tobacco License Fees

Plainfield officials also voted to ban the sale of hookahs.

Selling tobacco just got more expensive for businesses.

On Monday, village trustees voted to amend the existing tobacco ordinance, increasing the annual fee for a tobacco license from $100 to $250.

The ordinance was also amended to prohibit the sale of hookahs.

The changes were proposed by Chief John Konopek during a July 9 Committee of the Whole meeting.

Konopek said enforcement efforts have shown that hookahs are often used in illegal consumption of cannabis.

The ordinance also bans the sale of cigarette pape and prohibits establishments from selling tobacco or tobacco accessories from vending machines.

According to Konopek, the tobacco license fee was last updated in 2001.
