Village to Replace Trees Destroyed by Storms, Ash Borer

Trustees voted to spend $140,000 to purchase and install 400 parkway trees throughout Plainfield.

Village trustees voted to award a $140,000 contract to the Suburban Tree Consortium to replace 400 parkway trees that were either or felled by the dreaded Emerald ash borer.

Village Administrator Brian Murphy said Plainfield has been a member of the tree consortium since 2005, adding that the membership allows the village to secure lower prices on trees.

The 400 new trees will be a variety of species and will replace some of the 200 trees that have been removed so far due to ash borer infestation. The insect is known for burrowing its way through trees, destroying them from the inside out.

According to Murphy, about 160 of the trees will replace parkway trees removed in the Champion Creek subdivision, which was particularly hard hit by the Emerald ash borer.

Another 150 new trees will replace those destroyed by storms this year.

Tree planting is scheduled for this November.
