Voters to Decide on New Wheatland Building Plan

The board approved a special meeting of electors, set for Aug. 26.

Two years ago, voters held a special meeting and ordered Wheatland Township to renovate its existing headquarters on 91st Street — but officials say they think they have a better, cheaper plan.

On Thursday, township trustees voted to hold a special meeting of electors at 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, at John F. Kennedy Middle School, 12350 Essington Rd. in Plainfield.

Instead of renovating the existing building, which had to be gutted due to building code violations, the board is proposing entering into a lease agreement wit the option to buy with the Wheatland Township Highway Department.

The board is proposing to move the supervisor's and assessor's offices into the existing highway building at 4232 Tower Ct. in Naperville.

The proposal that will go before voters also asks residents to authorize the township to either sell or lease the existing building at 31W236 91st St.

Supervisor Chuck Kern said the township has contracted with an architect to come up with cost estimates for renovating the highway building to create additional office space.

Currently, with the 91st Street building out of commission, the township is renting space at the shopping center anchored by Nevin's Brewing, 12337 S. Route 59, at a cost of $60,000 per year.
