Abrell: New Superintendent Begins Journey in District 202

Dr. Lane Abrell officially became District 202's superintendent July 1.

To The District 202 Community,

Let me be the first to “officially” welcome you to the 2014-2015 school year.

Every school year is filled with many new things, including staff. This year, I am honored to be taking a new role in District 202, as the Superintendent of Schools.

Of course, I am not completely unfamiliar with District 202.

For those who do not know me, I served two years as assistant principal at what was then Plainfield High School, and is now Plainfield High School – Central Campus, from 1997-99.

I proudly served another seven years as principal before being named Superintendent of the Leland School District in LaSalle County. I certainly enjoyed my time in Leland and learned a lot, and I am very happy to be back in District 202.

I actually joined the district last year as Associate Superintendent, which allowed me to work with former Superintendent Dr. John Harper for a year. This was invaluable, as I was able to re-introduce myself to longtime staff and meet new faces.

I would like to thank Dr. Harper for his 33 years of service to District 202, including the last 12 as superintendent, and for giving his time to assist my transition into this new role.

I would also like to thank the Board of Education for its confidence as we head into a unique and challenging period for all of public education, and most especially District 202.

Although much will be new this year, one thing remains as true today as it has been for many years: District 202 is one of the largest public school systems in Illinois. However, we continue to have many of the most talented, dedicated educators, support staff, and administrators you will find anywhere.

You have my word that we will always focus on each individual student to make sure they all learn and grow every day.

We will continue to push ourselves in and out of the classroom, in the Board room and at the District Office to improve learning, teaching and academic growth for all of our students.

We will work hard to use our community’s limited resources wisely, effectively and efficiently to serve all of our students, families and staff members to their greatest benefit.

And most important, we will dedicate ourselves to ensuring that every District 202 student leaves our schools prepared to succeed as an informed, thoughtful, contributing member of our world.

I am excited to partner with you as we begin this new journey. Please feel encouraged and welcome to share your suggestions, ideas, and dreams for District 202. Together, we will continue to prepare learners for the future.

Dr. Lane Abrell
