District 202 Encouraging Participation in Abe Lincoln Lookalike Contest

The 2013 Great Read celebrates the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, made in 1863.

The following was provided by Plainfield School District 202.

Students from preschool through fifth grade in Plainfield School District 202 are invited to dress up like Abraham or Mary Todd Lincoln and enter “The Great Read Abe and Mary Look-a-Like contest” as part of the 2013 Great Read community literacy program.

The 2013 Great Read celebrates the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, made in 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation is one of Lincoln’s greatest achievements. It led to the passage of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865, which abolished slavery.

Plainfield-area community members are encouraged to read any books about the 16th president and take part in the Great Read’s numerous fun, historical and educational programs dedicated to Lincoln.

Children can enter the contest by coming dressed as Mr. or Mrs. Lincoln to the Great Read’s Grand Finale on May 2, 2013 at the Fountaindale Public Library, 300 W. Briarcliff Road, Bolingbrook.

Contestants will be photographed and registered at 6:30 p.m. and the program will start at 7 p.m.

Trophies will be given to the best costumed Lincolns in three age groups: preschool, K-3 and 3-5.

The Great Read is proudly presented by the Plainfield School District 202, the Plainfield, Fountaindale, Joliet and Shorewood-Troy public libraries, Joliet Junior College, Plainfield Township, Troy School District and the Joliet Barnes and Noble store.

The Great Read is supported by generous grants from the Plainfield Foundation for Excellence, the Friends of the Plainfield Public Library, Enterprise Publications; and additional funding from participating member organizations.
