District 202 Insurance Rates Hiked 14%

Broker solicits bids from three companies but none offered what the district currently has, officials say.

The cost of health insurance for has risen about $3 million for the upcoming year, district officials said.

The school board earlier this week approved the medical and dental benefits provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois in a one-year policy with a 14 percent increase over last year.

The district’s broker agent secured three quotes from insurance agencies but none of the plans matched what the district currently offers, said John Prince, district assistant superintendent for business and operations.

Negotiations with the district’s labor unions may change the benefits options, which then may lower the cost of insurance, Prince said.
