Power grid presentation discusses security issues Sept. 29

Lewis University will present "Compression of Power System Data for the Emerging Electrical Smart Grid" at 2 p.m. on Sept. 29 in Room AS 158 located on the University's main campus in Romeoville.

Dr. Ray Klump, chair of Mathematics and Computer Scienceat Lewis University and University University of Illinois Trustworthy Cyber Infrastructure for the Power Grid (TCIP) visiting research scientist, will deliver the presentation. He will explain how the nation's electrical grid is undergoing profound changes to accommodate renewable energy sources and achieve greater efficiencies. Most of the technologies require gathering, communicating, processing, and storing vast quantities of data.

One of the key new technologies is called the synchrophasor measurement unit, which sample power system quantities at 30-60 times per second and offer system operators a much more detailed picture of the grid's health. His presentation will describe a new technique for more efficiently storing the vast quantity of important data these new devices collect.
