River View School Holds Food,Toy Drive for Needy

Plainfield- River View Elementary School students and staff want to make sure the holidays are bright for those in need, so they are hosting two drives -- one for gifts for River View families in need, and another for food, toys and gift cards for the greater community.

The school community is hosting a holiday giving tree and the River View Student Council is hosting a food, gift card and toy drive. Both drives run Wednesday, December 1, 2010, through Monday, December 13, 2010.

The community is invited to donate non-perishable food items, new and unwrapped toys and gift cards.  Donations can be dropped off at the school from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. during school days.  River View is located at 2097 Bronk Road, Plainfield.

River View staff members are requesting all gift cards be purchased for grocery stores or general big box supply stores.  All items will be delivered to the week of December 13, 2010.

The donations will benefit at least six families in need at River View as well as families in the Creekside Elementary School "Creekside Cares" program; other district needy families; the Plainfield Interfaith Food Pantry; the Toy Box Connection; and MorningStar Mission.

In addition, River View is hosting its third annual holiday giving tree.  River View staff members, parents and students are invited to take a gift tag off the tree in the school foyer, purchase the item and return it unwrapped, with the tag attached, by Monday, December 13, 2010.

The giving tree gifts will be wrapped and given to the families by Friday, December 17, 2010.  Cash or gift card donations are also being accepted and will be used to purchase additional items for families in need.

River View staff members are selecting the benefitting families for the drives.

"Over the past few years, some of our River View students have experienced the loss of a parent and others have experienced hard times through job loss and illness, and our staff and PTO has become so involved in wanting to help these families," River View Social Worker Clare Beasley said.

"So the giving tree gives us an opportunity to help during the holidays, which is so important to children," she said.
