Plainfield North, Roberts Trounce OEHS 35-7

Huge homecoming game for Jay Roberts, who rushed 282 yards and kept his team in the playoff hunt going into the season finale.

Junior running back Jay Roberts played like it was his last game as a Tiger. This was exactly what his team needed to stay alive in the playoff hunt as Roberts ran all over in a 35-7 homecoming rout.

On the Tigers’ (4-4, 3-3) first possession, Roberts carried the ball on all four plays. Three of those runs, including his 41-yard TD, were for over 20 yards.

“The holes were huge,” Roberts said, laughing. “The offensive line did a great job and the outside blockers opened up some holes for me, too.”

He went on to have 148 yards on nine carries in the first quarter alone (including a near-miss on a TD at the end of the first quarter for 49 yards) and 282 yards on 40 carries for the game.

“(Roberts) is a junior, but he’s grown a lot and he plays with a lot of passion and energy,” Tigers coach Tim Kane said.

The Tigers made it 14-0 early in the second quarter with a one-yard TD by junior running back Mike Antos. It was the first of three on the night for him.

“(Antos) is a great running back,” Roberts said. “He can pick up for me anytime he wants. He’s a greater running”

Antos added his subsequent scores midway through the third and on the first play in the fourth quarter. Roberts added his second TD with four minutes left on an 11-yard run.

The Wolves (2-6, 0-6) had some chances early in Tigers territory, but they failed to convert on two fourth-down plays. The latter was derailed by a false start penalty when they had 4th and 1 at the Tigers’ 24.

Miscues and three second-half turnovers sunk any chances of a comeback. The Wolves, who started the season 2-0, remain winless in Southwest Prairie Conference play. They look to squeeze out a win at home next Friday against Plainfield East in their season finale.

The Tigers close their season on October 21 with a road game against rival Plainfield South. If the Tigers win they clinch an at-large bid in class 7A. However, it doesn’t guarantee a spot.

Kane doesn’t seem to feel the pressure, however. “We just have to go there and play with a lot of passion and energy like we did tonight,” he said.
