Get Ready for the East Side Shuffle: Plainfield East Hosts 5K

Proceeds from the April 21 event will benefit the PEHS Band Boosters, Science Club.

Given last week’s frigid temperatures, it might be hard to believe, but winter is more than halfway over and spring is on its way.

It’s almost time to lace up your running shoes for Plainfield’s first 5K of 2013.

For the first time, Plainfield East High School will host the Bengal 5K: East Side Shuffle, set for 9 a.m. Sunday, April 21, at the high school, 12001 S. Naperville Rd.

Race director Justin Koszarek, who is also PEHS’ band director, said the inaugural event will benefit the school’s Band Boosters as well as the Science Club, which is looking to install a natural prairie on campus.

“One of the ideas was looking for an alternative and unique fundraiser for the band program,” Koszarek said. “Budgets are getting cut statewide, yet prices are staying the same or going up so we are always on the lookout for a niche event.”

Koszarek said the East Side Shuffle will also help encourage community members to get active by taking part in a healthy activity.

The event will feature a 5K run/walk and a 1-mile Superhero Sprint.

“Keep in mind there is also a costume contest with the 1 mile, so dress up like your favorite superhero,” Koszarek said.

Participants will be able to take advantage of early registration prices, but registration will also be accepted from 7 to 8:30 a.m. on race day. To register online or for more information the East Side Shuffle, click here, or see the registration form included with this article.
