Lincoln Student Wins District 202 Future Chefs Competition

Plainfield students came up with plenty of creative concepts for this year's sandwich-themed competition.

Submitted by District 202:

Lincoln Elementary School fourth-grader Alex Pena won District 202's 6th annual Future Chefs Competition, sponsored by the district's food services provider, Sodexo. His winning entry, titled "Tasty Heaven Sandwich" was made with whole grain tortillas, Nutella, bananas, raisins and Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal.

Sodexo received 88 entries from 15 of District 202's 17 elementary schools. One finalist from each of the 15 schools took part in a "cook off" on May 7.

With help from Sodexo employees, the young chefs assembled their creations for judging, and then shared with parents and audience members. Entires were judged on presentation, ease of preparation for children, taste and healthiness. This years theme was sandwiches.

Lakewood Falls Elementary School fourth-grader Dominic Luciano won second place for his "Caprese Sandwich" and third place went to Grand Prairie Elementary School fourth-grader Grace Bardachowski for her "Grace's Gourmet Sandwich."

The top prize winners received assorted kitchen gadgets and the 15 finalists' recipes are published in a special book created by Sodexo.
