2011-12 Schedule Ends 1st Semester Before Winter Break

The Plainfield School District 202 board also approves calendar with school starting four days earlier than this year.

The Board has adopted a new schedule for the 2011-12 school year that has the first semester ending before before winter break.

Changes made also add one full week of instruction to the year and sets parent-teacher conferences two weeks earlier in the fall, according to a news release issued by district spokesman Tom Hernandez.

The full schedule can be found at http://www.psd202.org/Dist202/districtcalendar.php?p=1112.

Highlights include:

  • The first day of school will be Aug. 18, 2011, four days earlier than this current school year.
  • The last day of school will be May 25, 2012, assuming no snow days are used. The last day of school will be a half day.
  • The first semester ends Dec. 22, 2011. Winter break runs from Dec. 23, 2011, through Jan. 6, 2012.
  • Spring break runs from April 2 to 6, 2012.
  • Parent-teacher conferences will be held on Oct. 20-21, 2011, and March 15-16, 2012. School will be in session for only five hours on each day.
  • School holidays are Sept. 5 (Labor Day), Oct. 10 (Columbus Day), Nov. 23-25 (Thanksgiving break), Jan. 16-17 (Martin Luther King Day and teachers institute day), Feb. 20-21 (Presidents Day and teachers institute day).

Correction: An earlier version of this story said there would be an extra week of class added to the schedule. That is incorrect. The article should have said that it adds a week of class that will be uninterrupted by holidays, conferences or other events. That is a positive change, Tom Hernandez says, because "continuity of instruction is very beneficial."
