Students Must Pay to Go to Games at Schools They Don't Attend

New ticket rate designed to ensure students are there for 'right reasons,' not to cause trouble, board vice president says.

Starting this fall, Plainfield students wanting to attend a sporting event in which their school is not participating will have to pay an entry fee.

The board Monday approved the new policy, but a fee for attending the athletic events has not been determined.

Students need to show their school ID to be admitted to the game. If their school is not one of the two teams participating in the game or if they forget their ID card, they will be charged, said board Vice President Michelle Smith.

The move was done as a safety precaution and to maintain crowd control, she said. The board also wants to ensure that students are at the athletic events for the “right reasons” – to support and cheer on their school – and not to cause trouble, Smith added.

Concessions will be made for students who come to the game with a coach as a way to prepare or scout for a future game.

Students are not charged admission for home or away games that their schools are participating in, Smith said.
