Volley for a Cure Fundraiser at Plainfield South Tonight

The game will hold special meaning for Plainfield South, whose girls volleyball coach is battling breast cancer.

The Volley for the Cure initiative is gaining momentum. That means more awareness and, ultimately, more funding to fight breast cancer.

To that end, Plainfield South High School is hosting a Volley for the Cure game tonight in which it will face off against its Southwest Prairie Conference rival Plainfield North.

The game will hold special meaning for the Cougars' girls volleyball team and their coach, Amy Larson, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. She is currently undergoing treatment for the disease, which is the second most common cancer among women, according to the American Cancer Society.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is a little less 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 35.

Breast cancer death rates have been diminishing, according to the American Cancer Society. It is probably a result of finding the cancer earlier and better treatment, experts say.

Currently, there are more than 2.5 million cancer survivors in the United States.
