Lessons Learned in 2011

Welcome, 2012! I have learned a lot in 2011 and I have waited a whole year to see what 2012 will bring.

Not having the typical corporate job, coupled with my overzealous approach to using auto date functions, I rarely write out dates anymore. Despite this, I somehow managed to slowly train myself to autonomously write “2011.”

With the reality slap of Christmas tree carcasses lying patiently at the curb, I realize that 2011 is quickly coming to an end and I need to prepare for 2012, a new year of chances, changes and cheerfulness.

And as I continue to fight the urge to continuously write 2011 throughout next year’s journey, I mustn’t forget my life’s lessons of 2011.

1) “Common sense” isn’t necessarily common sense anymore. And as Brookstone prepares to ship a THIRD shipment of Australian Beer Glasses (without any protective packing material); I will continue to nod my head when this shipment also arrives at my doorstep as a pile of dust.

2) No matter how early my husband goes to sleep or how late he stays in bed, he will always fall asleep during our annual adventure to see the Nutcracker Ballet.

3) No amount of floss, toothpaste or fluoride rinse will override the enamel-eating products obtained during the holidays that are now hidden strategically in my children’s bedrooms and throughout the house.

4) The $50 spent on diapers in seasons past is nowhere as expensive as cheerleading, chess, music lessons or gym shoes.

5) The benefits of having a mentor are indescribable. They have been there, done that and seen it well before me most of the time and have saved me from a lot of heartache.

6) The only thing that will stop a bully in their tracks is a little self-reflection on their part induced by a strong parent and/or education on the concept that bullying, stalking, libel, etc. is a FELONY.

7) Questions and feedback are two words with a lot of punch. If it doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t. Sometimes a little reality check reveals the rules that are implemented are not necessarily the right rules — or even the rules in the first place.

8) Education is both expensive and priceless at the same time. Putting the wrong people in charge of your education will bankrupt you.

9) Family vacations are a must. The chance to get away from the daily grind to reconnect with your spouse and your kids offers more magic than Disney could ever offer.

10) And, finally, as I continue to aim for the light at the end of the tunnel in my current endeavors, I have learned that taking the blinders off and riding the walls may have lengthened the trip a little, but it gave me one heck of a ride!

Happy New Year!
