Athlete of the Week: Plainfield South Golfer Matt Ward

Three-time, all-Southwest Prairie Conference player setting sights on state

Plainfield South’s Matt Ward wasn’t satisfied with becoming the school’s first boys golf state qualifier a year ago.

So, the three-time all-Southwest Prairie Conference player is aiming to win the first boys golf medal in history this year.

He will get his chance during regional, sectional and state meets over the next two weeks.

When did you first pick up a club? I was 6 years old.

What’s the best thing about golf? No two shots are the same so every shot is a challenge.

What’s been your greatest sports moment? Winning the Southwest Prairie Conference team championship as a freshman and qualifying for the state tournament in 2010.

What was your most embarrassing sports moment? I got kicked in the face and broke my nose during basketball last year. I had to wear one of those weird looking face guards at practice.

What is your favorite pig-out food? Buffalo wings.

Who are your favorite athletes? Chicago Bulls guard and reigning NBA MVP Derrick Rose, Olympic gold medal snowboarder Shaun White and professional golfer Bubba Watson.

What are your individual goals for the 2011 season? Keep improving throughout the season and try to take it one hole at a time.
