Plainfield East Posts Back-to-Back Wins over Dist. 202 Rivals for First Time

Plainfield East 60 Plainfield Central 48. The Bengals took the lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

The Hot Read: For the first time in its history, Plainfield East beat District 202 and Southwest Prairie Conference rival Plainfield Central 60-48 in boys basketball action Wednesday at East.

Patch's MVP: Plainfield East's Brian Bennett scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds. 

Back-to-back: The victory came 24 hours after the Bengals’ first win over Plainfield North. Plainfield East has now beaten all three District 202 schools at least once.

Plainfield East Leaders: Brian Bennett, a 6-foot-8 junior center, had team-highs of 21 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Jawan Straughter scored nine points, junior guard Mack Brown tallied eight points and junior guard Deontre Brown had four rebounds and three steals.

Plainfield Central Leaders: Junior Andre Norris had 17 points and senior Derrick Marks scored 12.

Long road trip: The game was the third road contest in six days for Plainfield Central, which is in the midst of a six-game road trip.

Big bucket: Drae Shelton's short jumper with time running out in the first quarter gave Plainfield East the lead for good at 14-13 after a quarter.

Defensive points: Straughter was the point man of the Bengals’ defense on Marks, a 6-3 guard headed to Boise State University. He was helped on defense by junior Myles Walters. Marks scored half of his points in the first quarter.

Quotable I: “Jawan, I can’t say enough about how hard he worked to guard Marks,” Plainfield East coach Branden Adkins said. “Myles (Walters) did well against him, too. You have to do special things with special players and Marks is a special player.”

Quotable II: “We broke the streak of losing to North and Central, our in town rivals,” Bennett said. “Now, we have to finish off the season against South in the next couple of weeks. It’s about keeping this run going heading into the playoffs so we can make a good run there.”

Quotable III: “We just didn’t have consistent energy,” Plainfield Central coach Steve Lamberti said. “You can’t just run up and down the court and expect good things to happen. You have to make them happen.”

 Records: Plainfield East is 12-9 overall and 5-5 in the SPC. Plainfield Central fell to 16-7, 6-5.

A look ahead: Plainfield East hosts Romeoville (6-15, 3-7) and Plainfield Central travels to Minooka (9-14, 2-8) Friday.
