For Plainfield Central, It's a Day for Young and Restless

The Wildcats post four scores under 44 in home-opening boys golf win over Plainfield East.

In high school golf, there usually aren't many spectators for a weekday afternoon match, so golfers are left to play nine holes in a relative state of anonymity. On weekends, they typically play 18 holes in front of small galleries.

Regardless of the stage, Plainfield Central's boys golf team is putting on quite a show this season. The defending Southwest Prairie Conference boys champion improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play Wednesday with a 161-199 victory over Plainfield East at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville.

Plainfield Central sophomore Mitch Young shot the day's low round, an even-par 36, and the Wildcats' top four scorers shot a combined 161. Nick Dylla (40), Andrew Kordelewski (42) and John Michalek (43) followed hot on Young's heels.

Wildcats coach Darren Kobliska was pleased with his team's performance, especially after a tough practice session Tuesday in gusty winds.

"We have a solid team this year and any four can contribute at any match," Kobiliska said. "We shot well today and I'm very proud of our play in our first home match, especially after yesterday's wind."

Plainfield East's four scorers combined for a total of  199. The Bengals were led by freshman Jake Kauffman's 4-over-par 40. Bob Kenny (48), Alex turk (56) and Kevin Pikul (58) were next in line.

"Jake shot well today," Plainfield East coach Brad Neubauer said. "It's our goal for him to make the all-conference team, and today's match was definitely a step in the right direction."

"I had seven pars today, and only two bad shots that set me back," Kauffman said. "It's hard to gain any ground when you play a kid like Mitch (Young), especially after he birdies."

The Wildcats next head to the Batavia Invitational on Saturday. The Bengals (0-6, 0-2) face Joliet Catholic today.
