Members of the and Plainfield’s Ford family are hoping to make Thanksgiving a little happier for those in need.

The Moose Lodge, which collected 723 turkeys last year to help feed hungry families, is hoping to surpass that number this year in its 12th annual Turkey Drop on Saturday.

About 25 volunteers will be collecting frozen turkeys from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Plainfield Moose Lodge, 16310 S. Lincoln Highway. In exchange for a frozen turkey, the lodge will offer a free brunch. Cash donations will also be accepted that will go towards the purchase of additional turkeys.

Already, the Moose Lodge has collected enough donations to buy 644 turkeys, putting it on pace to surpass last year’s collection, Provo said Wednesday.

The number of donations speaks to the generosity of the people in the Plainfield area, he said.

“It’s unbelievable with these hard times, people find money to help us out,” he said.

With these hard times, there is also a larger need to help feed the hungry.

All donations are going to the , We Care of Romeoville Pantry and the MorningStar Mission in Joliet to include in their Thanksgiving baskets. Wheatland Township and a few parishes have also contacted the Moose Lodge to receive help serving their needy families.

“MorningStar Mission is key to our success,” Provo said. “They’ve provided us a refrigerated truck to store the turkeys.”
