Plainfield 5K Race to Benefit Wounded Warriors

Scheduled for May 26 in Settlers' Park, the event is organized by Operation Welcome You Home.

Usually, they’re in the business of staging heroes’ welcomes for returning U.S. servicemen and women.

On May 26, Operation Welcome You Home will host a different kind of event in Plainfield, this time to help wounded warriors.

So far, nearly 300 people have registered for the organization’s first-ever Wounded Warriors 5K Run/Walk, set to step off at 8 a.m. May 26 in .

Operation Welcome You Home founder Donna Morsovillo said proceeds from the race will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.

While Plainfield has hosted its share of 5K races in recent months, this one is special, according to village trustee Jim Racich.

“This one is really going to be close to a lot of people’s hearts,” he said. “[The Wounded Warrior Project] is really a marvelous organization.”

The program provides free services to injured veterans, including combat stress recovery programs, physical therapy and rehabilitation, adaptive sports, career counseling and job placement.

Race participants can sign up on the Welcome You Home website, or register on-site between 6:45 and 7:45 a.m. the day of the race.

The $25 registration fee includes a commemorative T-shirt. All proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.

Morsovillo said a special opening ceremony is planned prior to the May 26 event. She declined to discuss details of the festivities, saying have some surprises in store.

But on Monday, Racich said spectators can expect patriotic music, bagpipes and appearances by some of the wounded veterans aided by Wounded Warrior Project. So far, nine veterans have signed up participate in the 5K, he said.

“How cool it would be if people would come out, carry flags and line the street and cheer everyone on,” Racich said.

“It’s going to be really awesome,” Morsovillo said.
