"It's always a win-win when individuals with disabilities - of all types and all ages - have and take opportunities to learn about the many resources available to them to enhance their independence,” said Pam Heavens, executive director of the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living.

U.S. Census figures show one in five Americans has a disability, according to numbers from the Center for Independent Living. Since advocacy and self-advocacy is what the center is all about, it is looking to help expo visitors learn how it can help them help themselves.

The Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living will be one of nearly 50 exhibitors Saturday offering options for people exploring their potential. The Center will display free amplified telephones, explain youth services that run the gamut from assistive technology grants to school workshops, and outline volunteer opportunities.

“Whether it's a young student and parents who need support during the school years, an adult seeking independent living skills, peer support with an adult-onset disability, or seniors or veterans who can benefit from free amplified telephones that help them stay in their homes, the center has much to offer and great staff from which to get acquainted,” Heavens said.

And critters have special abilities, too, you know. Service Dogs of America will do doggie demonstrations and the grooms from Ready Set Ride will be on hand to talk about the magic between horses and kids seeking confidence. Several schools for children with autism, Special Parent Magazine and a host of service organizations will host booths at the expo.
