Want to Volunteer? Here Are Five Places that Need Help

These opportunities and others can be found at volunteermatch.org.

Periodically, Patch readers ask us about opportunities in the community where volunteers are needed.

Here are five area organizations that need help that we found on volunteermatch.org, a great online group that serves as a clearinghouse for efforts that need volunteers and people who want to offer their time.

1.

Jewel Pick-Ups For Local Food Pantry = St. John Lutheran Church Food Pantry Description: "St. John Lutheran Food Pantry is seeking volunteers to do pick-ups at a local Jewel grocery store (Jewel Address: 2480 Illinois 59, Plainfield, IL, 60586). We would need volunteers to go to Jewel every Monday and Wednesday at 9:00am to pick-up donated food and bring it back to the pantry. Volunteers would need to use their own vehicles. Please note that any interested volunteers will be part a larger pick-up schedule and wouldn't be committed to pick-up every week." Click here for more information.

Fight Obesity: Help Lead Fun Fitness Programs for Children = Fitness 4 Change. Description: "Cheerleading & Poms instructors, Dance & Spanish Teachers, Soccer Coaches & Basketball Coaches. Locations in Plainfield, Romeoville, Bolingbrook & Joliet. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about one or more of the activities listed above and believe that all children should have the opportunity to learn a new skill. Our goal is to introduce them to the sport. All children can participate regardless of their families financial contribution. No Child is Refused." Click here for more info.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Joliet = American Cancer Society - Relay for Life. Description: "We are looking for individuals to help create a world with less cancer and more birthdays! On Sunday, Ocotber 20th our participants will take to the Chicagoland Speedway to Make Strides to Finish the Fight! We are looking for volunteers to assist in planning the inspirational event, assist with tasks at the event and much more." Click here to read more.

Help Save Our Environment & Wildlife/ Nicodemus Wilderness Project. Description: "The Apprentice Ecologist Initiative (officially recognized by the U.S. EPA) has engaged tens of thousands of young people (kids, teens, and college-age youth) from around the world in environmental cleanup and conservation projects since 1999. This program has received multiple awards from the City of Albuquerque, a "Best Community Impact" award from Eastern Kentucky University, and is featured on thousands of web sites. Guide Girls to be Tomorrow's Leaders = Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana. Description: Girls in the Joliet area need inspiring troop leaders-people like you! We're looking for people with time and talents to share with girls in kindergarten through high school by leading Girl Scout troops. You choose the time and location and we will recruit the girls.
