Once an old rock quarry, the lake that has since been formed is a huge nesting area for several varieties of herons and egrets, and is now part of the Will County Forest Preserve District. There is complete access to the 839-acre site from mid-August through the end of February, but it becomes restricted to a one-mile walking trail and three access points off US-30, Renwick Road and Lockport Street in the remaining months, so nesting is not disturbed. Visitors can view the area in the summer if they participate in pre-arranged tours. There's limited fishing at Turtle and Budde lakes.
