The Joliet Junior Woman's Club is launching a scholarship in honor of Plainfield-area resident Alisha Bromfield and her unborn daughter, Ava. The 2013 JJWC Alisha and Ava Bromfield Memorial Scholarship will become an annual scholarship awarded to a young woman graduating high school in the Joliet area and attending any accredited two- or four-year college or university, according to Kim Kalafut of the Junior Woman's Club. Candidates for the scholarship must demonstrate academic success and make significant volunteer contributions to the community, have a strong character, be well rounded and be in the process of applying to a two- or four-year school. A Plainfield-area man slated to go on trial in the murders of his friend and her unborn child in Door County will wait a little longer for his day in court. A judge agreed to push back the trial date for Brian M. Cooper, 35, to April 8, 2013, to give the defense more time for discovery, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette. The case was originally scheduled to go to trial on Jan. 28, 2012. Cooper is charged with first-degree intentional homicide and third-degree sexual assault in the deaths of Alisha N. The family of slain mom-to-be Alisha Bromfield is hosting a benefit Saturday at Toyota Park in Bridgeview to raise money to pay for a headstone and the family's travel to her accused killer's trial. Bromfield died Aug. 19. Brian M. Cooper, 35, is charged in Door County, WI, with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Bromfield, 21 and her unborn daughter, who was to be named Ava Lucille. Drive honors Alisha Bromfield and her unborn daughter, Ava Lucille.
The Joliet Junior Woman’s Club and and Joliet Juniorettes are collecting new baby items and gift cards in memory of a slain Plainfield-area woman and her unborn daughter. Diapers, wipes, bottles, pacifiers, onesies, socks, hats, bibs and clothing are being accepted now through Nov. 2 in memory of Alisha N. Bromfield, a 21-year-old expectant mother who was killed Aug. 19. Bromfield was a 2008 graduate of Joliet Catholic Academy and studied forensic science at Western Illinois University. The drive, which also honors Bromfield’s unborn daughter, Ava Lucille, will benefit pregnant women throughout the Joliet and Plainfield area. Family and friends are mourning the loss of Alisha N. Bromfield, a 21-year-old Plainfield area woman slain during a trip to Door County, Wisconsin. Referring to her as Alisha Bromfield-Anicich, an obituary said the expectant mom and her unborn daughter, whom she’d planned to name Ava Lucille, will be laid to rest following funeral services on Saturday, Aug. 25. Bromfield was a 2008 graduate of Joliet Catholic Academy and studied forensic science at Western Illinois University. She is survived by parents Sherry and Joseph Anicich and James and Amy Heisner, along with a sister and three brothers. Visitiation is scheduled for 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at Fred C. Updated at 6 p.m. Aug. 20 A family friend of 21-year-old Alisha Bromfield said the Plainfield resident was several months pregnant when she was killed, according to the Door County Advocate. The friend, who asked not to be named, said suspect Brian M. Cooper, 35, was not the father of the baby. Door County Sheriff Terry Vogel would neither confirm nor deny that Bromfield was pregnant. The sheriff has also not released any information regarding Bromfield's cause of death. Cooper, who has not been formally charged, is scheduled to appeaer in Door County Circuit Cort at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
