Boys Track: Cougars Win Sectional Title, Heading to State Finals

Plainfield South wins five events en route to taking the Class 3A Plainfield North Sectional crown.

After a botched handoff that cost Plainfield South a chance to win the 4x200 relay at Thursday’s Class 3A Plainfield North Sectional, Cougars junior Dantrell Wright had some redemption to chase. With the team standings between the Cougars and West Aurora still tight, Wright shook off his bad exchange with senior Dondre Adams with a thrilling win in the 200 meters, setting a personal best at 21.80, to help Plainfield South win the team title. “I just felt relieved,” Wright said. “The 4x2 can’t go to state, but overall, I feel a little better after the 200. I felt like I got one back for the team.” The Cougars wound up with 102 points to win the meet, though the absence of the 4x200 at next week’s state meet at Eastern Illinois University in…

Plainfield East's Petrusich Outpaced in State Cross Country Finals

Meanwhile, Minooka senior Joe McAsey ended his Indians' cross country career in style with a ninth-place showing.

PEORIA -- In the large-school division Class 3A cross country state tournament, Plainfield East junior Niko Petrusich was within striking distance of Sandberg High School's Lukas Verzbicas and York senior Jack Driggs at the mile mark. But Petrusich withered in the grueling pace set by Verzbicas, who became the fourth person in state history to better 14 minutes with his championship-defending effort of  13:54. "I just couldn't keep it going," Petrusich said. On the other hand, Andrew Sandoval was one of the hard-luck competitors in the stacked field.
The Plainfield North senior had his career come to a close in bitterly disappointing fashion: Sandoval was 26th, one spot out of all-state consideration. Nick Sinadinos' time at Lincoln-Way …

Plainfield North's Sandoval Chases After His Dream

Tigers' senior wants to end career with second all-state medal; Minooka boys and girls teams bid to make mark at state cross country meet.

So far, the state hasn't taken notice of the cross country teams at Minooka. The Indians are gunning to change that at the Class 3A state meet Saturday at Detweiller Park on the north side of Peoria. The girls race is at 1 p.m. and the boys will start an hour later. Included in the boys field is the entire Minooka team, plus two Plainfield individuals, North's Andrew Sandoval and East's Niko Petrusich. Minooka also qualified as a team for the girls championship race. The top three teams and top 25 individual finishers will earn awards.           "If we can go down there and run our best, good things are going to happen," Minooka boys and girls coach Kevin Gummerson said. "I like to focus on Minooka and what we can do because you can't play…

Plainfield North's Sandoval, East's Petrusich Headed for State Meet

Tough course, tougher field at Lockport cross country sectional.

LOCKPORT – Two years ago, Plainfield North High School's Andrew Sandoval burst onto the cross country scene by finishing 18th in the state meet, with a time of 14:55. After a year marred by injuries, the senior has returned to full strength and is making a third trip to state after taking fourth place at the Lockport Sectional at Dellwood Park on Saturday. Sandoval covered the hilly, 3-mile course in 15:57. "It was fun," Sandoval said. "I ran a smart pace in the beginning. Everybody moved up little by little. I was at a good, concentrated pace the whole time. It was a good race for me." Two years ago, Sandoval was the first all-state runner in District 202 history in nearly 30 years. This year, he wants to better his 18th-place finish of …

Weather or Not: Large Plainfield Contingent Advances Out of Regional

Rain, mud doesn't deter sectional qualifiers.

NAPERVILLE – A rainy morning and muddy course may have affected some of the participants at the Class 3A Bolingbrook boys and girls cross country regional Saturday afternoon at DuPage River Park. It had very little effect on the teams and individuals who advanced to the Lockport Sectional a week from today. Defending state champion Neuqua Valley placed six runners in the top 10 to easily win its third boys regional championship, all coming over the last four seasons. Neuqua Valley scored 20 points. Lockport (84 points), Plainfield North (94), Plainfield South (99) and Plainfield East (131) grabbed the other four sectional qualifying spots in the nine-team regional. Individually, Plainfield Central's Brad Anderson (16th in 16:27), John …

Plainfield Runners Settle for Individual Honors at Southwest Prairie Meet

Minooka boys and girls dash to conference cross country titles.

OSWEGO –Minooka swept the Southwest Prairie Conference boys and girls cross country championships Saturday morning at Oswego High School. The boys racked up their fifth straight league title dating back to when the eight-team league was formed. The girls ended a three-year hiatus after winning the title in 2007. Individually, Minooka's Joe McAsey and Oswego East's Ariel Michalek each won SPC championships. Minooka's girls placed four runners in the top eight and finished with 39 points. Oswego East was second with 57 points. "That was a great run for them," Minooka coach Kevin Gummerson said. "It's been a few years. In 2007, we won it. We're happy to bring that trophy back to Minooka." "We've been working really hard and I know this was …
