You Choose: Election 2011

Here's All You Need to Know about Today's Election -- Now Go Vote!

Residents will be choosing candidates for the village, school and fire boards; check Patch tonight for election results.

Sick of seeing those "Vote for" signs in every other yard in town? Well, the day of reckoning has arrived; by 10 or 11 tonight we should know which new faces will be gracing the school, village and fire boards. You're going to be doing your part, right? The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Will County, and there are only four contested races in which Plainfield residents will be voting. Of course, turnout is notoriously low for consolidated elections held in April. In both 2009 and 2007, only 18 percent of the electorate bothered casting ballots. There really should be no excuse today given the National Weather Service's forecast for Plainfield, which is calling for mostly sunny skies, wind from the west at 10 to 15 mph and a high …

I would think elections fall under public record. Since there is no expectation of privacy given that any neighbor can see who shows up at their respective precincts and make a visual ID - that this would be a good exercise for an FOIA. Although, in my sub-division we all know who does and doesn't vote. The idea of shaming people like that isn't worth it - they are devoid of it to begin with. As …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Make Informed Decision and Vote

Plainfield School Board member Michael Kelly urges readers to learn about the candidates and not be swayed by blogs or rumors.

As we go into Tuesday's election, I want to remind everyone to get out and vote. And make your voice heard. This really is an important election. Please don’t make your decision just on what you have read in the blogs or in the rumor mill. Make an informed decision on who is going to move Plainfield schools forward in a way that works for all of the children who arrive at the Plainfield School District 202’s door each and every school day. The school district has had to make some really difficult decisions over the last couple of years. Funding for education in Illinois is a mess. If you read the papers, you know that the state of Illinois has lots of work to do to right the ship. District 202 has been hugely impacted by that funding and …

Mr. Kelly-I agree with you urging residents to vote; however, I disagree with you telling them not to read these blogs & comments as people have a right to share opinions about the candidates & those candidates have every opportunity to respond if they feel necessary. I am also tired of hearing our budget deficit problems are on the state! Yes, the state is disfunctional when it comes to …   more ›

Dist. 202 Candidates Say Balance Between Spending, Curriculum Needed

Seven people seeking to fill three school board seats discussed issues at Tuesday night forum.

Advancing curriculum and programming and retaining teachers while dealing with decreasing funding are just a few of the priorities of the candidates for the Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 board. The seven candidates vying for three four-year terms participated Tuesday in a moderated forum at Plainfield Central High School, offering their beliefs about the progress and problems in District 202. Incumbents Roger Bonuchi and David Obrzut are seeking re-election. They will be joined on the April 5 ballot with William Dargan Jr., Kevin Kirberg, Greg Nichols, Anthony Scala and Tommie Van. Current board Present Stuart Bledsoe is not running for another term. The school district has cut about $33 million in expenses in the …

Seven Vying for Three School Board Seats in the April Election

Incumbents Roger Bonuchi and David Obrzut are among those in the running; board president Stuart Bledsoe is not seeking re-election.

Seven candidates have filed to run in the April 5 election for three openings on the Plainfield Consolidated Community School District 202 board. Two are incumbents, David Obrzut and Roger Bonuchi. The other five are Kevin Kirberg, Anthony Scala, Greg Nichols, William Dargan Jr. and Tommie Van. Because three of the candidates -- Obrzut, Bonuchi and Nichols -- submitted their election petitions at 7:30 a.m. Dec. 13, the first day of filing, a lottery will be held Wednesday to determine the order in which their names will appear on the ballot. All of the open seats are four-year positions. Only Stuart Bledsoe, currently the board president, has opted not to seek re-election.
