No. 9 Wildcats eliminated from volleyball sectional after Thursday night loss to No. 1 Benet.
The clock finally struck midnight for Cinderella at the Class 4A West Aurora girls volleyball sectional championship game. No. 9 Plainfield Central (23-16) could not find the magic it had during an improbable run to the sectional final, dropping a 25-17, 25-14 decision to No. 1 Benet Academy (36-3) Thursday in Aurora. The Redwings’ height and play at the net proved to be too much for the Wildcats, who had beaten the Nos. 3, 6 and 7 seeds to reach their first sectional final in 23 years. “They had so much heart to even get to this point,” Plainfield Central coach Jessica Clark said. “We upset three teams to get here, so I couldn’t be prouder of this team for making it this far.” “Our team has no regrets,” Plainfield Central senior captain …

Wildcats face mighty Benet Academy in West Aurora sectional final Thursday.
It looked as if Plainfield Central High School’s postseason run was about to end. Lockport had a 25-24 lead and the serve during the third game of the second Aurora West girls volleyball sectional semifinal Tuesday in Aurora. A serve into the net gave No. 9 Plainfield Central life and it took advantage to post a 25-22, 15-25, 27-25 win over No. 7 Lockport Township High School. The resurgent Wildcats (23-15) will take on No. 1 Benet Academy (35-3) for the sectional championship at 7 p.m. Thursday. After Lockport took a 25-24 lead on a hitting error by Plainfield Central, the Porters were in position for victory. A serve error left the door open for the Wildcats’ third upset in the state tournament. “We opened the door for them and it is …

Redwings defeat Plainfield Central 7-2 to advance to Oswego East sectional.
Last year the Benet Academy softball season came to a close on the Redwings’ home field, and that was not a lot of fun. On Saturday, pitching, defense and some big bats delivered plenty of smiles for Benet as the fifth-seeded squad knocked off No. 4 Plainfield Central 7-2 to claim a 4A regional title and advance to the Oswego East sectional next Wednesday. The biggest hit of the day came in the top of the fifth when Redwing clean-up hitter Nora McGuire belted a 3-run home run to right center to cap a 4-run outburst that broke a 1-1 tie. Through 4 innings the game’s offense consisted of a solo homer by Benet freshman Julianne Rurka in the second and a solo shot off the bat of Plainfield Central’s Dominique Roa in the bottom of the third. …

The Bengals finish their season with 65-35 loss to school expected to go all the way in the finals.
The Benet boys basketball team knows that when the playoffs come around, its perfect record, top ranking in the state and Midwest, and No. 6 national ranking don’t matter. The Redwings saw teams like Downers Grove South and Glenbard East survive tough tests in their regional openers Tuesday in games that, on paper, they were expected to dominate. Benet made sure they wouldn't go through a test like that. The Redwings scored the first 10 points of the game and led by as many as 33 in their 65-35 win over Plainfield East in the Class 4A Naperville North Regional semifinals Wednesday. Benet will face the host Huskies for the regional title and a berth in next week’s East Aurora Sectional Friday at 7:30 p.m. at North. “It was just keeping us …

Sports writer Paul Johnson ranks the top five boys basketball teams in the region, plus a list of the five next best.
1. Benet Academy (24-0): The margins of victory keep getting smaller, but the wins keep coming for the Redwings. Last week’s wins clinched their second straight East Suburban Catholic championship. 2. Downers Grove South (20-3): The Mustangs continue to roll, overwhelming Willowbrook and Downers Grove North to make it 13 straight wins. DGS gave up only 46 combined points in the two wins. 3. Neuqua Valley (20-4): The Wildcats recovered from a mid-season lull to win four of their last five games. Avenging their first loss of the year at East Aurora Thursday would give them a great shot at winning the Upstate Eight Valley title. 4. East Aurora (16-5): The Tomcats join the region with this week’s launch of the Montgomery site. UConn-bound Ryan…

Sports writer Paul Johnson ranks the region's top five girls basketball teams, followed by a list of the next best.
1. Bolingbrook (19-2): The Raiders have been so dominant in 13 games against Illinois opponents that anything short of another Class 4A state title will not do. The average margin of victory thus far in Illinois has been 80-30. Astonishing. 2. Benet Academy (19-6): A non-conference win over Hinsdale Central has given the Redwings 11 wins in their last 12 games as they prepare for Naperville North in regionals next week. 3. Naperville Central (21-8): The Redhawks continue to storm up the rankings after a big win over Wheaton North Monday clinched at least a tie for the DuPage Valley Conference crown with one game to go. 4. Sports writer Paul Johnson ranks the top area high school boys basketball teams from 1-5, plus a short list of the next best.
1. Benet (22-0): Redwings keep on overcoming every challenge, but the road to facing Simeon Feb. 19 is no picnic. St. Patrick, Marist and Niles Notre Dame are no guarantees in East Suburban Catholic play. 2. Downers Grove South (18-3): Mustangs’ surge continued with a win over Morton, avenging one of their three losses this season. Oh, and that makes 11 straight wins and counting. 3. Neuqua Valley (19-4): Wildcats bounce back from Waubonsie loss by dominating Bolingbrook. The schedule sets up nicely for a strong regular-season finish as well. 4. Oswego (14-5): Panthers push closer to a Southwest Prairie Conference title with wins over Plainfield East and South. A chance for a second win over both Oswego East and Plainfield Central await …
