Incumbents Michelle Smith, Rod Westfall return to the board, joined by newly elected Bill Dargan and Bill Slabich Jr.

Two outgoing Plainfield School District 202 Board of Education members bid farewell Tuesday as two brand-new board members were sworn in. With incumbents Rod Westfall and Michelle Smith rejoining the board, new members Bill Slabich Jr. and Bill Dargan officially became part of the school board. They join current members Kevin Kirberg, Greg Nichols and board president Roger Bonuchi. As a brand-new board member, Slabich said his biggest concern is “how we’re going to get the most out of the lack of funds we have and give the best education for the kids,” he said, adding the state funding situation is “the scariest part.” Dargan, who ran for the board in 2011 before being elected last month, said his focus is on the students. “Everything we …

there was no heckler, there was a gentleman who was disturbed by the fact that there would be no audience questions taken due to a 60 minute forum cap due to the iPhone recording the session only being able to record that long. And he was also, like me, irritated with the very generic standard answers to questions. These people will be in charge of the district that my young children will be …   more ›

I was some what disappointed in this forum. The fact that the time limit was 60 minutes due to an iPhone memory problem seemed to be unfair. And given the outburst from one gentleman I wasn't the only one irritated by this. Also I am really somewhat scared of the candidates that are running, there are really one 2 that I think have a concept of what school is. We all know that the budget and the …   more ›

Big Changes Proposed for District 308 Calendar

Plus changes to parent/teacher conferences, institute days and early dismissals days.

The 2013-14 Oswego District 308 school year calendar may be seeing some big changes, including start date, semester end date and teacher institute days. “This calendar should truly reflect not only what was important to parents, teachers, administrators and the board, but the overarching goal to make sure calendar served the goal of teaching and learning in the district,” said Superintendent Matthew Wendt at the school board's Monday night meeting..  “Is it perfect? No. Is it improved? Yes?” The tentative draft of the new calendar would have students in grades 1-12 beginning school Monday, Aug. 19, rather than in the middle of the week as it has been. Kindergarten would start that Tuesday. Board president Bill Walsh did not like the change…

Oswego 308 Approves Purchase of New Transportation Facility

The decision to purchase a building rather than build a new facility at the current location could save up to $800,000 of what was previously budgeted.

Oswego School District 308 has approved the purchase of a transportation facility at a new site rather than build one at the existing location. The recommendation came from Superintendent Matthew Wendt to purchase a building to house the district’s transportation department—a move that likely will save up to $800,000 what was previously allocated to construct a new transportation facility. Last year the board allocated $2.7 million to build a new transportation facility on its current site. Vendor bids for the construction of the new facility were requested at twice by the board. At Monday night’s board meeting the school board voted 7-0 to reject the bids for the transportation facility that were opened earlier in July, due to the fact …
