Cold March Freezes Out Local Golfers

Rounds are way down this month at Heritage Bluffs and Wedgewood—but the anticipation of a new season dawning is building at both golf courses.

So, if you’ve been wondering just how much colder it’s been this March vs. last March, then consider this bit of startling news from a couple of local golf course pros. From March 1 to March 19 last year, 1,300 rounds of golf already had been played at Wedgewood, one of the Joliet Park District’s three golf courses. This year, 16 rounds were played during that same time period, Wedgewood golf pro Jason Shook said. And Brian Smith, the golf pro/manager at Heritage Bluffs Golf Club in Channahon, had much of the same kind of news to report. Smith said it’s been so wet and so cold in recent days members of his grounds crew were working Tuesday afternoon to chip ice out of the cups on many of the holes at Heritage Bluffs. No joke. “The flags …

Republican Fitzgerald Says He Won't Oppose Gay Marriage at Oswego Forum

Shorewood trustee differentiates himself from conservative field.

Candidates in the Republican race for the 49th State Senate District discussed everything from tax reform to Illinois' civil union law at a forum sponsored by the Oswego Toastmasters on Tuesday night at the Little White School Museum.  The candiates are Shorewood village trustee Gary Fitzgerald, Oswego village trustee Tony Giles, Plainfield trustee Garrett Peck and Will County board member Brian Smith. Due to illness, Peck could not attend the forum. Spokesman Mark Batinick filled in for Peck. Few differences emerged among the candidates on the state's biggest problems, including the budget deficit and the state's comparatively high unemployment rate. However, Fitzgerald did come out in support of civil unions and gay marriage, saying …

Chris, which departments have a gross excess of employees at the Federal level? my problem on this is that I'm just not fond of the thought of cutting jobs during a deep economic recession where the market is unstable to begin with. IDES is overloaded as it is. Senate bill 3816 [s.3816] would add jobs, which is the big first step. But back to the oil commodity market : shipping american oil …   more ›

Plainfield Man Announces Bid for County Board Seat

Mike Costello says he wants to be more involved in local government and believes his civil engineering skills would enhance his ability to serve the district.

Political newcomer Mike Costello is collecting signatures to run for a Will County Board District 5 seat in the March 20, 2012, election. Costello, 29, is an Oak Forest native who has lived in Plainfield since 2005. He said his reasons for running are two-fold: A desire to get more involved in local government and the belief that his civil engineering skills can be beneficial to the board. "There is not a single issue that I am running on," he said. "I've long had an interest in learning how government works, and I'm ready to get more involved in that. "I'm not so much critical of the board, this isn't a vote-one-guy-in-and-the-other-guy-out situation. ... I do think I have a good skill set that will help the board priortize where the …
