Plainfield Business Evolution Center Gives New Businesses a Boost

For more information, call the planning department at 815-439-2824.

Plainfield's Village Hall isn't just home to local government — it's also a place where local businesses get a chance to thrive. The village's Business Evolution Center offers office space, including high-speed Internet and phone service, for brand-new businesses. For $100 per month per cubicle, businesses also get access to a copier and conference room. The goal of the program, which allows new or home-based businesses to rent space for 12 to 18 months,  is to help fledgling businesses make connections in the community — and, hopefully, to stay in Plainfield once they leave the evolution center. Business Evolution Center Gives Startups a Boost

Village program gives fledgling companies a start in Plainfield and is currently filled to capacity.

It was launched as a way to give small businesses their start in Plainfield — and, ultimately, to keep them here. Approved by the village board in January, the Business Evolution Center already has a waiting list, according to Village Planner Michael Garrigan. “We’re basically 100 percent occupied,” Garrigan said of the program, which allows businesses to rent spaces in a 4,000-square-foot section of Village Hall. For just $100 per month per cubicle, startups get a professional office environment, plus access to the Internet, telephone service, copiers and use of a shared conference room. “It allows them to kind of get their sea legs, so to speak,” Garrigan said. Businesses can rent space for 12 to 18 months. The idea is to help them …

Business Incubator Center Flies with Village Board

The Business Evolution Center is being called an "experiment" in which the village will license village hall cubicle space to help fledgling companies get off the ground.

Small start-up businesses needing help to get launched will soon be able to turn to Plainfield's new Business Evolution Center, which won Plainfield Village Board approval Monday to use unoccupied space in village hall. A 4,000-square-foot section of the building, previously used by the village building department, will be divided into cubicles that can be rented for $100 a month by local residents who are creating a new business but do not yet have the means to lease office space. Participants will have to meet specific criteria and will sign a license agreement that allows them to use the space for a maximum of 18 months. The contract can be terminated without cause at the village's discretion, village Planner Michael Garrigan said. "The…

Wouldn't a Plainfield museum, branch for the library, college extension or maybe a home for scouting programs be a little more community appropriate? Small businesses starting out of a home have tax deductions that a $100 cubicle outside of the home wouldn't offer. Maybe the voters booths could take up the extra floor place.....   more ›

Village Hall-Based 'Business Evolution Center' to Nuture Fledgling Companies

Business owners would rent cubicles for a nominal fee in order to have a professional place to do work, meet clients and eventually grow large enough to rent actual office space.

Eight or so years ago, when construction on the then-new Plainfield Village Hall was completed, the economy was booming and village had 40 more people on its payroll then than it does today. Fast-forward to 2012, and the economy needs all the help it can get, one section of village hall is unoccupied -- and an idea is born. The Business Evolution Center, in which fledgling businesses would be given village office space at a nominal fee to help them get off the ground, is being proposed by village staff. If approved by the Plainfield Village Board, it could be in place by month’s end, Village Planner Michael Garrigan said. “If you grow a business in a community, then it’s more likely to stay in the community,” Village Administrator Brian …
