Chicago and its surrounding suburbs are seeing a steady rise in flu cases.
Area health agencies are reporting that this year's flu season is particularly intense. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is monitoring "widespread" influenza activity in Illinois this year. According to Will County Health Department spokesman Vic Reato, since Dec. 1, area hospitals have admitted 41 patients to the intensive care unit for influenza-like illnesses, including 22 people during the first nine days of 2013. While there have been no pediatic flu deaths recorded in Will County, Reato said that statewide, there have been more than two dozen. Drug manufacturers have been feeling the effects of the increased number of cases. The makers of Tamiflu, which slows down flu symptoms, reported a shortage of the drug, …

DuPage County reported the state's first West Nile-related death on Aug. 18; Will County health officials urge residents to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

To date, there have been no human cases of West Nile in Will County this year, said Vic Reato, spokesman for the Will County Health Department. Last year, there were 34 cases of the illness statewide. “We’ve had lots of birds and mosquitoes,” Reato said, noting that the number of WNV-positive mosquitoes found in Will County has doubled compared to last year. “I think at some point it would not be unreasonable to assume that we could have some human cases.” With five human cases so far this summer, DuPage …

County health department urges caution to guard against tick-borne Lyme disease.
Spring is here. Tulips and daffodils have awakened from their long winter sleep, and many of us are anxious to get out of the house and enjoy the great outdoors. But there can be danger lurking out there, especially in wooded or overgrown areas. Whether hiking through the woods, camping or just cleaning up the yard, residents should be on the lookout for ticks - those itsy-bitsy, blood-sucking bearers of Lyme disease. According to the Will County Health Department, Lyme disease is one of the most prominent of several illnesses carried by ticks. “While West Nile Virus has received much more attention, Lyme disease has quietly become the nation’s most common vector-borne illness,” said Vic Reato of the Will County Health Department in a …

Remember the village's water restrictions and follow these CDC tips in order to avoid getting ill.
This week's going to be a broiler, with daytime temperatures settling in at 90 to 95 and the mecury never dipping below 75 at night, according to the latest National Weather Forecast for the Plainfield area. The village has sent out a notice reminding residents that Plainfield has a year-round water usage ordinance that permits lawn sprinkling between 6 and 10 a.m. and/or 6 and 10 p.m. on even-numbered calendar days for those with even-numbered addresses and the same for odd-numbered days/odd-numbered addresses. The watering of gardens, trees, shrubs and flowers is allowed any time as long as it's with a handheld hose or watering can. Beyond that, the Centers for Disease Control offer these basic recommendations that will help prevent heat…
