Suspect in Police Custody for CVS Armed Robbery

Few details available about the Wednesday night incident, other than no one was injured and no shots fired, Joliet Lt. Mike Batis said.

A man accused of holding up the CVS drug store at Caton Farm and Drauden roads Wednesday night is in custody and likely to be charged with armed robbery, Joliet police Lt. Mike Batis said. The incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m., and it's believed the suspect acted alone. No shots were fired or no employees or customers were injured, Batis said. Beyond that, however, no other details about what occurred or how the suspect was captured will be released until morning, he said. "The suspect's being interviewed right now," said Batis, speaking at about 9:40 p.m. "He probably will be booked (into the Will County jail) tonight." He will "probably" be booked? Why probably? especially with a criminal record. HE should be booked no question about it.   more ›

Man Stole $1,000 in Cosmetics from CVS, Police Say

Police say the suspect was observed stuffing the merchandise into his shirt; he's been charged with retail theft and burglary.

A man observed stuffing $1,000 in cosmetics down his shirt at a local CVS store was arrested Monday by Plainfield police. Antonio Rivera, 34, 4602 S. Fairfield Ave., Chicago, faces burglary and retail theft charges in connection with the incident, which occurred shortly before noon at the 11840 S. Route 59 store. A store clerk watched Rivera stealing the merchandise and then followed him out as he left, Detective Sgt. Kevin McQuaid said. When she saw he was headed to a nearby Kohl’s store, she called the police. Officers apprehended Rivera as he left the department store and were able to recover the stolen CVS merchandise, McQuaid said. Rivera was also arrested on an outstanding warrant issued by the Schaumburg Police Department for retail…

Once the Sun Sets, Town Gets Quiet on Christmas Eve

Not many restaurants or stores are open on the night before Christmas, but we have found a few if you're looking for a drink or dinner.

Last Christmas Eve, my daughter and I thought we'd have a nice intimate dinner at one of area's fine dining spots.  We started out at Tommy Nevins Pub (OK - technically in Naperville, not Plainfield, but right over the border.) The parking lot was uncharacteristically empty and the Christmas lights were dark. No problem, I told her. We'll just head over to charming downtown Plainfield and sup at one of its delightful dining destinations.  Cruising south, we oohed and aahed at home holiday lights displays in the subdivisions surrounding Van Dyke Road. But when we got downtown, it seemed more like Halloween than Christmas.  The place looked like a ghost town.  We ended up at a not particularly charming franchise pub in Joliet eating …
