The theater's opening was postponed from last October until this spring due to an illness in the owners' family, but now plans are completely canceled.
Despite the sign out front that still advertises the Encore Dinner Playhouse, plans to open the theater are officially dead. Christina Kitchel, the leasing agent for the 4,700-square-foot space at 16108 S. Route 59, said the Encore project has been canceled and the property's currently available for lease. The dinner theater had been the brainchild of Jenny and Gary Giocomo, Crest Hill residents with an extensive theater background in Chicago, Las Vegas and Colorado. They envisioned a stage for musical reviews coupled with dinner that would be catered by a local restaurant, Jenny Giocomo said at the time. Plans to open in October 2011 were postponed, however, because of an undisclosed family member's illness. Giocomo said the opening would…

Residents urged to keep off the streets through Thursday; school canceled again because of dangerously cold temperatures.
As Plainfield continued to clear the roads of of snow Wednesday night, impeded by more than 80 stranded vehicles, Mayor Michael Collins declared a "local state of emergency." At the worst of the storm Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, 30 vehicles were blocking roadways and 25 people had to be given shelter at the Plainfield Police Department. The shelter remains open as needed, particularly as temperatures drop to dangerously cold levels overnight. Public works officials said they hoped to make at least one to two snow plow passes through every village subdivision overnight Wednesday before tackling cul-de-sacs, which are last on the list for clearing, said Amy De Boni, in a news release issued Wednesday afternoon. Blowing snow and dangerously cold temps prompt the decision, officials say.
School is canceled on Thursday, Plainfield School District 202 officials have announced. Citing the blowing and drifting snow and dangerously cold temperatures, a decision was made at 9:30 a.m. today to keep the schools closed another day and to cancel all activities involving students, staff, parents and community members, said district spokesman Tom Hernandez in a new release. No decision on whether school will be canceled on Friday will be made until Thursday, he said. The district urged parents with children in the YMCA's Kidz Zone to check the agency's Web site, www.jolietymca.org, to get information on the status of that program. Hernandez also said that a power outage knocked out the district's Web site, www.psd202.0rg, so no …

Area sees somewhere in the neighborhood of 16 inches of snow.
We may be out of the woods as far as more snow accumulation goes, but National Weather Service reports say the fun is far from over. Wind gusts will continue through tonight, ushering in an overnight low of 18 below. This, on the heels of the blizzard that whipped through Tuesday night -- with its occasional near-zero visibility, howling wind pelting ice against windows and surreal claps of thunder -- makes it all feel a bit Armaggedon-like. According to the most recent numbers available, 16.4 inches of snow were tallied at the National Weather Service office in Romeoville, and weather watchers in Joliet recorded anywhere from 12 to 17 inches. O'Hare International Airport measured 20.2 inches and Midway Airport had 19.9. (To see more …

15-20 inches of snow doesn't sound like a lot until you see the 4 foot drifts against doorways and behind parked vehicles. The roads in Wesmere are absolutely untouched at 9:00 this morning and I am hoping to find information on Routes 56 and 59 so that I can alert my husband with an all-clear to come home from his stranded location in Aurora... Any news on road conditions? Any recommendations of…   more ›
