PEHS's Adkins Named B-ball Coach of Year

The coach's team went 27-2 in the regular season and set records for the school and for the Southwest Prairie Conference.

Plainfield East High School basketball coach Branden Adkins has been named Class 3A/4A coach of the year by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. Adkins led his team to a 27-2 regular season finish as well as first-place conference and regional championships, both firsts for the four-year-old school. The team was the first in Southwest Prairie Conference history to go undefeated in a season, winning their first 14 games and losing only one regular season game. Team center Brian Bennett was a candidate for Mr. Basketball in Illinois.  Adkins will be honored at the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association's 40th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Dinner on April 28 at Illinois State University in Normal.

Plainfield East Wins St. Charles East Tournament

Plainfield South, North and Central struggle in other Thanksgiving tournaments held this weekend.

Plainfield East High School turned to its defense and delivered in a 37-35 win over Schaumburg in the championship game of the St. Charles East Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday evening in St. Charles. The Bengals did not allow 10 or more points in any quarter as Dee Brown earned the tournament's Most Valuable Player award. The victory puts Plainfield East at 4-0 on the season and gives them their second Thanksgiving tournament championship in three years. They won the Lincoln-Way North Thanksgiving tournament in 2009. Brian Bennett's 13 points and eight rebounds led the way in the final. Brown chipped in seven. Plainfield South, East Place in the Top 22 in State Cross Country Final

Coaches already anticipating better things next year because only two of their top runners are graduating this year.

Shortly after their performances Class 3A state cross country championship, Plainfield South and Plainfield East high schools talked of making it an annual event. Plainfield South placed 20th and Plainfield East took 22nd Saturday afternoon in Peoria' Detweiller Park. “We have five out of our top seven back next year with state-race experience,” Plainfield South coach Jason Crowe said. “We want to start making this an annual tradition for Plainfield South cross country.” “Everybody but Niko (Petrusich) and Nick (Quiroz) are back next year,” Plainfield East coach Rich Gatz said of the Bengals’ two seniors. “We have five of the seven guys back. Plainfield Grabs Third Consecutive Track & Field Conference Crown

Plainfield South team holds off challenges from Minooka and Plainfield North.

The Southwest Prairie Conference boys track and field championship will remain in Plainfield. Plainfield South held off Minooka to win its third straight conference title Thursday at Plainfield East. The Cougars achieved its victory with 143 points to Minooka's 121 and Plainfield North's 105. “It’s really awesome to win three in a row, especially in this conference,” Plainfield South coach Jason Crowe said. “This conference has really stepped up the competition and it’s an honor to win it again.” Plainfield Central and Plainfield North won the first two SPC championships. Plainfield South was led by a group of seniors who have rewritten the program’s team and individual marks. “This is great for the senior class because these guys have …

Bowler Mom Throws a Strike on National Scene

Nikki Lunsford has been bowling since age 8, and now -- with a 223 average -- travels the tournament circuit around the country.

Instead of making spring break plans, Nikki Lunsford is busy striking out. Spring is the height of the bowling tournament season for Lunsford, a Plainfield mother of two who is modest by nature and petite in stature, but a mighty force on the bowling scene locally and nationally. Aiming for the pocket since age 8, Lunsford today has a high league average of 223 and high series of 815. “Bowling is just something I enjoy doing,” said Lunsford, a 1989 graduate of Joliet West High School who throws a 15-pound ball and stands 5-foot-4. “I do consider it more than a hobby.” For her, bowling is a family affair, with her kids taking up the sport and her husband Steve keeping competition fierce but friendly. “We’ve always been competitive, but we’…
