Follow These Tips to Stay Safe on Cyber Monday

Ray Klump, a Lewis University professor and computer expert, offers these tips to avoid problems while online shopping.

So, you plan on doing a little shopping from your desk on the day that's unofficially been labeled Cyber Monday. Not a bad way to avoid the crowds and take a pass on the circling the mall lot looking for a place to park and the lines at the registers as you try to make purchases, but there are pitfalls, too, says Dr. Ray Klump, Lewis University's director of the master of science in information security program. If you want to be safe, Klump offers these tips: 1. Make sure your computer's operating system, antivirus and anti-spyware software, and web browsers are up-to-date. Cyber Monday Sales Could Be Record Setting

A survey shows that roughly 50 percent of workers will be shopping online Monday.

Get that index finger ready. Set. Go and click to complete purchase. If your pointer finger is twitching, it could be because today is Cyber Monday, the day when shoppers, many who are working, take to their computers to make purchases online.  Today it is expected that roughly 50 percent of workers will be shopping while working, according to a survey on Internet use that CareerBuilder funded.  Last year Cyber Monday broke sales records and those strong online sales are expected to continue this year, according to CareerBuilder.  Based on the results of its survey, CareerBuilder expects that 50 percent of shoppers will be clicking away and buying online, on par with last year’s 52 percent. 'Small Biz Saturday' Ideal for Candlelight Christmas Event

Downtown Plainfield merchants are all for the new "tradition" if it gets more folks checking out their merchandise.

Was it Santa or serendipity that plopped Plainfield's decades-old Candlelight Christmas tradition on the same day as the brand new quasi-holiday "Small Business Saturday"?  No one knows for sure when it comes to the mysteries of Christmas.   What we do know is that all day Saturday Santa's helpers were building gingerbread houses at Cathy's Sweet Creations, and the Jolly Old Elf himself had squeezed in appearances and wish-listening sessions at Larry's Diner, Finnegan's Irish Pub and Gourmet Junction.  Moms, Dad, tots and teenagers decked out in wraps, mittens and scarves fresh-plucked from the back of the closet actually appeared to be talking to each other as they waited in short lines for their turn on the horse-drawn wagon.
