More Than 10,000 Books at Library Fundraiser Sale

The Friends of the Plainfield Public Library will also be selling CDs, DVDs and other items at the Friday-Saturday event.

There’s nothing like a good book … except a good book at a really good price. Thousands of titles will be up for grabs this weekend for a buck or less. The Friends of the Plainfield Public Library used book sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the library, 15025 S. Illinois St., Plainfield. The sale also will include titles on this year’s reading lists for middle school and high school students, along with used DVDs, CDs and books on cassette.  “I would love to have $5,000 raised this year,” said Barb Ebeling, president of Friends of the Plainfield Public Library. More than 10,000 books have been collected for this year’s sale, she said. That’s up from last year, when $3,500 was raised and went toward the purchase…

Counterfeit/Pirated DVDs Sold at Route 30 Plex Flea Market, Police Say

Acting on a tip, Plainfield police recovered more than 3,100 illegal DVDs valued at $7,800.

Plainfield police confiscated more than 3,100 counterfeit/pirated DVDs that were being sold at the Route 30 Plex flea market Saturday. Detectives, acting on complaints that illegal DVDs were available for purchase at the 16300 S. Lincoln Highway business, bought 10 items from three different vendors, Detective Sgt. Kevin McQuaid said Tuesday. With the assistance of the department's patrol division, police were able to take possession of 3,127 counterfeit/pirated DVDs worth about $7,817 had they been sold, McQuaid said. No arrests have been made, but two of the three suspects are known and have been interviewed, he said. Library's Too Cramped So Borrowing Time's Going from Two Weeks to Three

Library officials say that if the limit was not increased, they'd need to start storing older materials to make way for new items.

The Plainfield Public Library is upping the time patrons can borrow items from two weeks to three in order to free up shelf space in an increasingly crowded building, Assistant Library Director Lisa Pappas said. "Basically, it comes down to the fact that we are seriously cramped for space and we really don't want to reduce our physical collections," Pappas said. Additionally, some patrons have asked for longer checkout periods, she said. The longer loan period may also reduce overdue fines. "Two weeks is pretty standard in our shared catalog system so we had always thought we would just keep it," she said. "But we've reached a point where we really need to find every way possible to save some space without having to reduce the materials …
