Plainfield School District Adjusts Student-Staff Ratios

The change lowers the number of high school deans and guidance counselors in District 202 under the new plan adopted Monday.

The Plainfield School District 202 school board on Monday made some slight adjustments to the district’s student to staffing ratios based on Supt. John Harper’s recommendations. Staffing changes will go into effect for the 2013-14 school year. Harper said the change could mean layoffs, but it's too early to tell. Whether job cuts are in the future will depend on final enrollment numbers for next school year and, ultimately, the decision will rest with the board of educaton. On Monday, board members voted to lower to ratio of guidance counselors to students at the high school level from one guidance counselor per 375 students to one guidance counselor for every 350 students while raising the ratio of students to deans. Currently, the high …

District 202 Board Votes to Rehire 7 Deans

However, the board also voted Monday not to fill the 23 vacancies created by teachers who are retiring or resigning at the end of the school year.

Seven Plainfield School District 202 deans whose positions were eliminated under the budget deficit reduction plan will be recalled, but teachers who retire or resign may not be replaced, the school board decided Monday. In February, the board voted to cut the equivalent of 64 full-time jobs to erase a projected $3.2 million deficit in the 2012-13 budget. The layoffs included seven deans (one at each high school and one at John F. Kennedy, Timber Ridge and Aux Sable middle schools), which would have saved about $452,800, district officials said. On Monday, the board voted 5-2 to bring back the deans. Board member Michael Kelly and board Secretary Eric Gallt voted against the motion. Supt. John Harper also advised the board that the deans …

I am sorry, but I have to disagree. I currently have a 7th grader at HGMS & we do not have a dean at our school & yet seem to run just fine. In fact, of the seven middle schools, four are currently running without deans. If you look at the high schools, two have four deans while the other two have five, why the inconsistency? In my opinion, if the BOE was going to reinstate 7 positions in this …   more ›

District 202 Cuts 64 Jobs to Slash Budget Deficit

The school board Monday approved $3.9 million in cuts to ensure a balanced 2012-13 spending plan.

The equivalent of 64 full-time positions in Plainfield School District 202 will be cut in an effort to eliminate a projected $3.2 million deficit in 2012-13 budget. In a unanimous vote, the school board on Monday approved the layoffs, which will save an estimated $3.9 million. But state aid continues to be unpredictable and volatile, and the district may soon be on the hook for several million more in transportation and teacher pension costs that were once the state’s responsibility, district officials said. The approved cuts include the full-time equivalent of 27.4 members of the Association of Plainfield Teachers to save $1.77 million; the equivalent of 35.3 members of the Plainfield Association of Support Staff at a savings of about $…
