We’ll select 24 regional finalists, and from them, pick one grand prize winner. The day to give thanks is becoming nothing more than a prelude to Black Friday shopping as stores promote greed and undermine values.
Once upon a time, not so long ago, Thanksgiving was regarded as the beginning of the holiday season. Store Christmas decorations didn't go up until the day for thanks had been celebrated. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was the official arrival of Santa. Today, however, Thanksgiving has become nothing more than the starting gun for a race to Black Friday deals and, sadly, Santa arrived in the mall shortly after Halloween. Friends have told me disappointing stories this year. They have bemoaned how their family doesn’t want to get together this year because Mom and Sis are going out that night for the almighty Black Friday deals. Walmart is opening at 10 p.m. Thursday and Target two hours later, don’t you know?!? No grand turkey …

Fifth-annual Halloween house decorating contest will award prizes for best scary and family-friendly decorations.
If you're creative and competitive, it's time to get in touch with your inner ghoul and enter the 5th annual Plainfield Park District "Spook-tacular" Haunted Houses contest. Prizes will be awarded in two categories: most family-friendly house and scariest house. The contest is open to all park district residents and there is a $10 entry fee. Entry deadline is Oct. 21, with judging conducted on the nights of Oct. 26 and 27. Because the judges will be viewing the decorations from the sidewalk, make sure your display is visible from that vantage point. Winners will be notified on Oct. 28. A map that includes the addresses of all houses entered will be posted on the park district's Web site by Oct. 26 so the public can check out displays. For …

You don't necessarily need to get frostbite taking the lights off the front bushes but, for heaven's sake, stop turning them on.
The party is over, folks. It's time to turn out the lights. On the afternoon after New Year's Day, many of us spent yesterday plucking apart our artificial Christmas trees, limb by limb, and packing them back in the basement. We rolled up our lights in neat little balls knowing they will somehow tangle themselves again by next Thanksgiving. Today, Plainfield village public works crews are going through the same ritual. Say farewell to the holiday wreaths and banners that have adorned the village the past several weeks. It took three workers about four days to put them up and they will spend the next two days to taking everything down, village spokeswoman Amy De Boni tells us. Tom Quinn, of Quinn Landscaping, donated all beautiful …

K3 Lights spent Monday night filming all of the lit-up houses it could find; Patch will post photos of more so them our way.
The folks who run a Web site named K3 Lights spent a night in Plainfield this week capturing dozens of houses adorned in their best holiday attire. The video's now on their Web site, K3Lights.com, and on YouTube. You can watch the Plainfield video by clicking on the photo that accompanies this story or going to (http://www.k3lights.com/2010/12/k3-lights-presents-plainfield-day-12.html). K3 started out doing this just in the Kankakee/Bourbonnais area in 2009 but has expanded out this year to include many Chicago suburbs and northwest Indiana, including Wheaton, Downers Grove, Northbrook and others. They were in Romeoville and Bolingbrook Tuesday night, and will post their video from that trip later this week. So, check out the …

Cindi, thank you for reminding me what is truly important. Sometimes it it's hard to remember that there are families who are truly suffering through the holidays because we are so wrapped up in our own holiday drama. Those of us who have our health may be thankful for a long list of things, but when just a tiny breath is something on that list it is so heartbreaking. I know that I will be with …   more ›
