A Plainfield man faces up to 29 years in prison after a DuPage County judge ruled he was under the influence of cocaine and marijuana when he fatally struck a motorcyclist in Naperville last June. Michael Moreno, 32, of the 11000 block of Presley Circle in Plainfield was found guilty Wednesday in the death of 63-year-old Gerald Puglise of Lombard. Just prior to the June 13, 2012 crash, Moreno was involved in what prosecutors called a road rage incident, chasing a Honda driven by a 16-year-old Naperville girl as he drove west on Ogden Avenue. Police said driver lost control, struck median wall south of Route 126.
A man involved in an early-morning crash on Interstate 55 south of Route 126 in Plainfield died of his injuries Wednesday, state police said. Trooper DeAnn Falat said the man was driving a 2006 Mazda on southbound I-55 near milepost 260 when he lost control for unknown reasons and struck a center median wall. The Mazda became disabled in the left lane with no lights activated, police said. When a Good Samaritan driving a 2002 Pontiac pulled over in front of the Mazda to check on the crash victim, a semi-trailer that was also traveling in the left lane struck both vehicles, police said. The victim drove into a pole near Weber and Grand Haven roads, according to the Will County Coroner's Office.
An 85-year-old Plainfield man was killed Monday when his car struck a pole at Weber Road and and Grand Boulevard in Romeoville, the Will County Coroner's Office said. Henry R. Kutchins was pronounced dead at about 12:15 p.m. at Adventist Bolingrook Hospital, according to a news release from the coroner's office. The Romeoville Police Department is handling the investigation. No additional details were available Monday night. An autopsy will be conducted Tuesday, the release said. The wife and daughter of a Naperville motorcyclist who died in an October 2011 crash are seeking more than $50,000 in a wrongful death lawsuit filed against the Shorewood man accused of causing his death while driving drunk, according to The Herald News. Yorkville police suspect alcohol was a factor.
A 24-year-old Oswego resident died after he was thrown from his Chevrolet Equinox about 1:10 a.m. Friday on Route 126 west of Route 71, Yorkville police said. Marco Reyes, of Ridgefield Way, was headed east on Route 126 before the curve near Identa Road when the vehicle went to the right, overcorrected, crossed Route 126, hit a culvert and rolled, police said. The vehicle came to rest upside-down. Reyes was pronounced dead at the scene. Police found beer bottles and containers, including at least one that was partially full, and Reyes had a strong odor of alcohol about him, Yorkville Deputy Police Chief Donald Schwartzkopf said. Robert James Jr., 63, was pronounced dead at Rush-Copley hospital following the three-vehicle crash in Plainfield.
Illinois State Police on Wednesday identified the man who died in a three-vehicle accident early Monday morning on Route 126 as Robert James Jr., 63, of Yorkville. Plainfield Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton said James was driving east on Route 126 between County Line and Ridge roads shortly before 6 a.m. when his four-door Mercury crossed into the westbound lane, hitting a box truck. State police said the driver of the truck attempted to avoid the Mercury but couldn’t, and wound up striking an eastbound Kia. James was extricated and taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Andrew Henderson of Palos Park set to stand trial in crash that killed Minooka motorcyclist Ron Oswald and injured a family of four.
A Palos Park man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to two counts of aggravated DUI in connection with a July 14 crash that killed one man and sent a family of four to the hospital. Andrew Henderson, 24, has a Sept. 5 pretrial date on charges that he was drunk when his Dodge Durango SUV rear-ended another vehicle at the intersection of Route 126 and County Line Road, pushing the car into the path of an oncoming motorcycle. The Plainfield crash killed Minooka motorcyclist and father of eight Ron Oswald, 57.
