6 Local Library Districts Leave Consortium to Form Small Cooperative

White Oak, Lemont, Joliet, Plainfield, Fountaindale and Shorewood-Troy libraries have joined together to form the cheaper, more efficient Pinnacle Library Cooperative.

Some changes are in store for patrons of six local library districts. Starting April 10, cardholders will only be able to place items on hold at districts belonging to the new Pinnacle Library Cooperative: White Oak, Lemont, Plainfield, Shorewood-Troy, Fountaindale and Joliet. The six districts have split from the larger PrairieCat Consortium to form the new group. Fountaindale Executive Director Paul Mills, chairman of the Pinnacle governing board, said the primary motivation of the new cooperative is to provide better service to patrons. "(The six libraries) have a shared history of collaboration, so we're looking to build on that history with Pinnacle," Mills said. Kalnicky to Run for State Representative

Robert Kalnicky, a Bolingbrook resident, had been mulling a bid for either the new 49th state senate district or the 98th house district.

Robert Kalnicky will be running for the 98th state representative seat in November 2012. The vice president of the Fountaindale Public Library and a Romeoville business leader announced his intentions Tuesday. "It is clear a new direction is needed in state government and the residents of this district need a representative they can count on to represent their best interests," Kalnicky said in a statement. Kalnicky, a Bolingbrook resident, had been mulling a bid for either the new 49th state senate district or the 98th house district. The 98th district seat is currently held by Litchfield Republican Wayne Rosenthal. Kalnicky will be running for the new 98th district, which covers portions of Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Plainfield and Crest …

New 'Great Read' Book Explores Life-Altering Technology

In the first of several programs through spring, "Hamlet's Blackberry" author William Powers discusses his book Thursday night via Skype.

It is probably most appropriate that the kickoff to this year’s Great Read program uses the Internet-based Skype video-conferencing to chat with author William Powers. After all, in the book, “Hamlet’s Blackberry,” Powers examines the history of communication technology and how technology has impacted our lives. “Hamlet’s Blackberry,” published in 2010, is this year’s choice for the Plainfield area’s Great Read program, which begins with a Skype discussion with Powers at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Barnes & Noble, 2621 Plainfield Road, Joliet. Book discussions are being planned at the Plainfield, Joliet and Fountaindale libraries with more events, such as a professor lecture on the paperless classroom and a student-led panel on the use of …
