Blogs: How to Save Money This Holiday Season

A little creativity -- and help from online sources -- can save you a lot of money in this season in which people are encouraged to spend too much.

It seems this year the retailers have embarked on a particularly aggressive campaign to extract every last dime of disposable income in circulation. Price slashing, extended store hours, in-store credit and payment plans are being offered as an incentives to get you to scoop up merchandise, most of which was likely not even made in the USA. For many people, however, this year's holiday season will be very much like last year's: bleak and depressing. With limited funds, you are essentially disenfranchised from the annual holiday spend-a-thon but not so if you live "green 4 less." Black Friday Poll: Yay or Nay to Early Shopping?

Target made headlines this year by announcing its stores would open at midnight on Thanksgiving, and Walmart's beating them by two hours. What do you think?

Black Friday shoppers will have to get in line a little earlier this year if they want to take advantage of deals at Target and other area retailers — and it could interrupt their Thanksgiving plans. Target announced Oct. 28 that its stores will open at midnight on Friday, marking the earliest Black Friday opening in the company's history. “The holidays bring hectic schedules and tight budgets, so extending store hours and offering lots of additional ways to save makes Target a great choice for affordable, one-stop holiday shopping,” Target Executive Vice President Tina Schiel stated in a news release last month. Thanksgiving's One of Those Chock-full-of-Memories Holidays

While things inevitably change, the basics -- traveling to relatives' homes, turkeys going in the oven at dawn, the Macy's parade -- remain constant.

For the last 26 years – also known as my married life – Thanksgiving has been a traveling holiday of alternating destinations. One year we travel to Wisconsin, to celebrate with my wife's folks; the next we travel to celebrate with my own. But when I was young, shortly after the earth cooled, my family's home was the destination for most holidays. As I was growing up, Thanksgiving meant not having to get up and go to school. Nonetheless, I was usually up early, not only to see what my mom had going in the kitchen (she in turn would have already been up for hours), but also to make sure I didn't miss watching Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on the television. Township, Park District to Hold Free Holiday Lunch for Seniors

Reservations are required and must be made by Dec. 2.

The Plainfield Park District and Plainfield Township will co-host their annual holiday luncheon for Plainfield Township senior citizens on Dec. 14. The free lunch will be held at noon at the American Legion Hall, 24741 W. Renwick Road, Plainfield. Entertainment will be presented and door prizes awarded after lunch. There is no cost for the luncheon, but reservations must be made by calling Kathy at 815-436-8812, Ext. 12, by Dec. 2. Each attendee is asked to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the Plainfield Interfaith Food Pantry.
