Holiday Travel: Expect Lots of Traffic, Free Coffee on the Tollway This Christmas

Tollway officials expect 15.7 million vehicles on toll roads between Dec. 23 and Jan. 3.

For those last-minute shoppers, each of the Illinois Tollway’s four roadways offers access to great shopping: Tollway customers will also find there’s still time to tell Santa Claus what they want for Christmas.  On Sunday, December 23, visit and take a photo with Old Saint Nick at the Chicago Southland Lincoln Oasis on the south Tri-State Tollway (I-294/I-80) from 1 to 4 p.m.  The Illinois Tollway expects 15.7 million vehicles will use the tollway system during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays between Friday, Dec. 23, and Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2013. Illinois Tollway Hiring 50 Seasonal Tollway Collectors

The seasonal position pays $10 an hour, and typically runs from May, 15, 2013, through Oct. 31, 2013. Candidates must apply by Dec. 19.

The Illinois Tollway is seeking qualified candidates for approximately 50 seasonal toll collector positions that will open next year. The position will pay $10 per hour, and typically run from May 15, 2013, to Oct. 31, 2013, tollway officials said. Candidates must apply by Dec. 19. The Illinois Tollway has created accounts on Twitter, which will offer real-time information on incidents and traffic congestion.

Once upon a time tweeting was something only birds could do. Now, tweeting is the way to find out information and stay up to date on what is happening anywhere in the world. With the increased use of social media and cell/smart phones, the Illinois Tollway is taking to Twitter and tweeting to provide drivers with information for each of the four tollways, the Tri-State, Jane Adams Memorial, Reagan Memorial and Veterans Memorial tollways. Illinois Tollway Streamlines Process to Contest Violations

Agency’s new online service helps customers contest violations for which they are not responsible, usually when a vehicle is stolen or sold, officials said.

Vehicle owners who seek to contest tollway violations and fines for which they believe they are not responsible will no longer have to call customer service or travel to the Illinois Tollway headquarters in Downers Grove, officials announced. The Illinois Tollway launched Monday a new online service for contesting violations for which drivers are not responsible, usually in situations where vehicles have been sold or stolen prior to the violation date. Now, customers can contest toll violations at illinoistollway.com, where they will download a form, attach the required documentation and return it to the Tollway for review. Flying Through Tolls Without Paying? Tollway Says, 'We'll See You in Court'

Illinois Tollway system is owed more than $300 million in unpaid tolls and initial fines.

Anyone frequently using the Illinois Tollway system without paying may soon find themselves in court. The tollway authority announced last week that it is going after chronic violators by filing lawsuits against them. In fact, the first of those suits already have been filed, according to a press release from the tollway. “We are sending a clear and strong message to these chronic violators: ‘Your time is up,’ ” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur. “Anything less would be unfair to the 98 percent of tollway customers who pay their tolls on time.” The tollway is getting tough, and here's why: The total owed to the tollway in unpaid tolls and initial fines is $300 million. 7 Million Drivers Expected on Illinois Tollways Memorial Day Weekend

The Illinois Tollway expects the highest traffic volume on the Tollway Friday.

Driver’s hitting the toll roads in Illinois will not be alone, by any means. The Illinois Department of Transportation expects 7 million drivers to be on the toll roads throughout the state over the holiday weekend. Friday was expected to be the busiest travel day of the entire Memorial Day weekend, and drivers are being cautioned to drive safely through construction zones throughout the Illinois Tollway system.  The Illinois Tollway were expecting 1.6 million drivers to be on the state’s Tollway Friday. Illinois Tollway Expects 15.4 Million Vehicles on Its Roadways Over the Holidays

Tollway oases offer free coffee on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

The Illinois Tollway expects 15.4 million vehicles will use the Tollway system during the Christmas and New Year's holidays between Dec. 23, and Jan. 3- a three percent increase over the same period in 2010.  The heaviest travel is anticipated on Friday, when the Tollway expects 1.6 million vehicles to be on the road.  On an average day, about 1.4 million vehicles use the Tollway. To accommodate increased holiday travel, the Tollway will suspend all temporary maintenance and construction lane closures from noon on Dec. 23, until 9 a.m. on Dec. 26, and from noon Dec. 30, until 9 a.m. on Jan. 2, 2012.  Some work may continue behind barriers to keep work on schedule, but this work will not impact traffic. Toll Increase Could Fund $12 Billion Capital Plan

Ilinois Tollway proposal would mean 35-cent increase for I-Pass users.

Motorists will have to pay more to drive on the state's tollway system if the Illinois Tollway gets its way. To pay for a proposed $12 billion, 15-year capital plan, tolls would increase 35 cents for I-Pass users at a typical mainline toll plaza, with cash-paying passenger vehicles continuing to pay double the I-Pass rate, according to a Chicago Tribune report. The hike would be the first toll increase in 28 years, the report says.
