Remember the Home Extension? It Still Exists, But with a Modernized Name and Agenda
The group still talks about "farm wife" topics, but also tackles identity theft, closet organization and other issues. Its annual membership day is Oct. 11.
Marianne Eisenbrandt called me this weekend to tell me about an upcoming get-together for a deep-rooted Plainfield group. It's a sort of a 4-H for grown-ups. It has a long and sterile- sounding name, the Will County Home and Community Education Association, but back in the day it was called the Home Bureau – the ladies' offshoot of the Farm Bureau. The Plainfield branch is the Crystal Unit. There are units all over Will County. My interest began with Marianne's e-mail address, which includes the term "FarmWife." She told me how, for decades, women in this group would get together to share ideas on canning, gardening, cooking, child care and other things of interest to farm wives.
