Republicans warn of “January surprise” if Gov. Pat Quinn pushes his pension cost shift plan through.
Republican candidates staged a press conference in Plainfield Thursday afternoon to voice their opposition to property tax increases and a plan by Gov. Pat Quinn to shift teacher pension costs to local school districts. State Sen. Republican Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) and House Republican Leader Tom Cross (R-Oswego) joined candidates Garrett Peck and Bob Kalnicky at the Plainfield home of Vicki and Ernie Knight. In a press release, the candidates said Quinn’s proposal will mean higher local property taxes by shifting the state’s estimated $44 billion teachers pension burden onto school districts. “Everyone has begun to recognize — finally — that Illinois has the worst-funded pension retirement system in the country and a …

Reader Marie Henderson is impressed by both Republican and Democratic legislator candidates.
Dear Editor; I attended the candidate’s forum at Carrillon Lakes on Tuesday night and I thought I would share my opinions your readers. State representative candidate Natalie Manley, a Democrat who's running in the 98th District, does not impress me and is part of everything that is wrong with our formerly great state. She has taken over $300,000 from (Speaker of the House) Mike Madigan; this she doesn’t deny. What she does do is try to hide the truth. She makes the claim that she is receiving money from her state party, what she doesn’t say is that Mike Madigan runs the state party and sends his money to her. Miss Manley was also very deceiving on her arrest from earlier this year. She was arrested for beating her daughter. It doesn’t …

I have known Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant and her family for over 30 years. I have also had the good fortune of being Jennifer’s college professor and her colleague in education. During this time I have come to know Jennifer as a dedicated and committed public servant who cares a great deal about her constituents. As Will County Superintendent of Schools, she has demonstrated a strong advocacy for students, their families, their teachers and their school communities. I am confident that she will carry that same spirited advocacy for taxpayers when she takes her seat in the Illinois Senate. We need people who will do the right thing in Springfield. We need people who will support and fight for issues that will improve our quality of life. …

Recently the Patch came out with some good general election coverage and information for the voters to review on September 6th. Now that the ballots are out, I think people would like to read and hear more about the candidate’s positions on issues affecting all of the people they want to represent. Additionally, the questions asked are issues directly affecting those of us that live within this district. Specifically in the newly constructed 49th Senate district, I am looking for Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant to give us some answers to the questions that were asked by the Plainfield Patch. Agree with Mr. Peck or not his ideology, plan and positions are clearly spelled out for the voters to see. I would like to juxtapose his positions to hers …

Candidates are running to represent the 49th District in the Illinois Senate.
The two candidates seeking election to the 49th District State Senate seat may be from opposite ends of the political spectrum, but on Thursday night, they appeared to agree on one thing. “What we can’t have happen is for the state to put more responsibility on our local taxpayers,” Democrat Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant said of her opposition to a proposal that would shift the state’s nearly $90 billion pension liability onto local school districts. Republican Garrett Peck, a Plainfield village trustee, also opposes the pension shift. “I’m tired of watching Illinois bring itself to the verge of bankruptcy,” Peck said. “ … I’ve decided I want to reach out to residents and say, ‘What are your thoughts?’” Peck went on the offensive, several times…

Editor's note: The following is taken in part by a press release issued by the campaign of Garrett Peck. State Senate candidate Garrett Peck on Thursday issued a press release calling for a legislative pay freeze. Peck, who is running against Will County Regional Superintendent of Schools Jennifer-Bertino Tarrant for the new 49th District seat, is advocating a freeze of salary and benefits until the state's debt crisis is solved. “I don’t think I could look my constituents in the eye if I took pay increases out of their pockets, while Illinois families are struggling to pay the bills,” Peck said in a press release. “What kind of example is that to set, when politicians can’t pay vendors and providers, but take a pay increase? It’s …

The candidates will face off in the race for the newly formed 49th State Senate District.
An Illinois Senate hopeful has challenged his opponent to what he calls a “Lincoln/Douglas-style” debate. Republican Garrett Peck is facing Democrat Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant in the race to represent the newly formed 49th District. Peck, who serves on the Plainfield village board, issued a press release Wednesday calling on Bertino-Tarrant to join him at a debate sometime in mid-October. “As a private citizen, I always got tired of learning about where those running for office stood on issues through television commercials and campaign literature.” Peck said. “Now that I am a candidate, I want to bring an open dialogue to the public and give them the choice as to what they think is best for them and their families from a source they may not…
