No Means No: Is Jewel's Mandatory Cart-to-Car Service Too Much?

Whether you want them to or not, Jewel-Osco has implemented a new policy of following shoppers, and their carts, out to their vehicles. What do Patch readers think?

If you haven't shopped at your local Jewel-Osco grocery store in a while, be prepared for a new customer service initiative that you may, or may not, appreciate. It's called the "cart-to-car" service, according to couponsinthenews.com, and whether you want the help or not, your bagger is expected to follow you and your cart out to your vehicle. The service is mandatory, though Jewel-Osco denies it has anyting to do with keeping track of shopping carts, according to Coupons in the News. "We understand that this is a very different service and it might take our customers some time to understand that we want this to be the norm," said a Jewel customer service representative in the article. It was announced in January that Jewel-Osco stores …

Supervalu to Sell Jewel-Osco Stores

Deal is expected to be finalized this spring.

Jewel-Osco parent company Supervalu on Thursday announced it will sell the grocery store chain — along with its Albertsons, Acme, Shaw’s and Star Market chains — in a $3.3 billion deal. Jewel-Osco’s Plainfield store is located at 13460 S. Route 59. The grocery stores, plus affiliated in-store Osco and Sav-On pharmacies, are being sold to a consortium of investors led by Cerberus Capital Management, according to the Minnesota-based Supervalu. The deal, which includes $100 million in cash and $3.2 billion in debt, is expected to close this spring, according to the Chicago Tribune. The five grocery store chains will be acquired by Cerberus affiliate AB Acquisition, the paper reported. After the sale, Sam Duncan will replace current CEO Wayne …

I don't think they'd let the store go empty. That's a prime location there at Caton Farm & 59.   more ›

Police: Man with Gun Was Off-Duty Cop

Woodridge officer was attempting to stop an alleged theft in progress, according to officials.

A report of a man with a gun in the parking lot of a Plainfield Jewel-Osco store turned out to be an off-duty Woodridge police officer attempting to stop an apparent theft, police said Friday. Sgt. Mike Fisher said police got a call around 3:43 p.m. that a man with a gun was spotted in the parking lot of the Jewel at Route 59 and 135th Street. Five Plainfield squad cars responded to the call, Fisher said, blocking off the entrances to prevent the reported suspect from fleeing. “We came in a’blazing,” Fisher said, but police quickly learned the armed man was an off-duty Woodridge police officer who was trying to stop an apparent theft. Residents Stocking Up, Making Plans for Wintry Blast

Food and hardware stores seeing a higher-than-normal number of customers as everyone gears up for what could be a record snowstorm.

Business was as brisk as the gusting breeze Tuesday morning as shoppers stocked up for the impending blizzard.  The Kin-Ko Ace Hardware on Lockport Street has had about three times its normal number of sales, store manager Dave Flentge said. It sold all five of its snow blowers, and most of the shovels and salt it had in stock. Customers also were buying kerosene heaters to brace for worst-case scenarios.  All across Plainfield, people morning were laying in supplies and waiting for the snow to start. With a record-setting snowstorm predicted to blast the Chicago area with perhaps as much as a foot and a half of snow and wind gusts as high at 50 mph, residents and government agencies are on high alert.  Emergency management officials are …

Once the Sun Sets, Town Gets Quiet on Christmas Eve

Not many restaurants or stores are open on the night before Christmas, but we have found a few if you're looking for a drink or dinner.

Last Christmas Eve, my daughter and I thought we'd have a nice intimate dinner at one of area's fine dining spots.  We started out at Tommy Nevins Pub (OK - technically in Naperville, not Plainfield, but right over the border.) The parking lot was uncharacteristically empty and the Christmas lights were dark. No problem, I told her. We'll just head over to charming downtown Plainfield and sup at one of its delightful dining destinations.  Cruising south, we oohed and aahed at home holiday lights displays in the subdivisions surrounding Van Dyke Road. But when we got downtown, it seemed more like Halloween than Christmas.  The place looked like a ghost town.  We ended up at a not particularly charming franchise pub in Joliet eating …

Cookware Sob Story Nets This Cook a New Set of Pots and Pans

Kim Wright, who's been using her mom's hand-me-down cookware for years, was one of five people to win the Jewel-Osco contest.

Kim Wright is a single Plainfield mom with bills to pay and stockings to stuff. Her pots and pans may look like they've been through the war, but replacing them was more of a luxury than a necessity. The judges of Jewel-Osco's Cookware Intervention contest felt differently. Wright was one of five people awarded $400 in professional cookware to replace what can only be described as pots and pans that have seen better days. Contestants had to send in a photo of their battered cooking implements and write an essay about why they could use new ones. "Mom gave me starter cookware when I moved out, but avocado green? Almond white? And what happened to that black sauce pan?" Wright wrote in her letter. "Buying a new set is on the back burner …
