Yesterday was Labor Day. Hopefully you got to take a day off of the daily grind and relax a little bit. As you head back to work this week, though, we asked an expert – what can you do to work smarter and therefore get more done in less time? Beth Randall owns Joe Organizer, which is based in Plainfield, but has given presentations at the Joliet Library, Black Road Branch, the Shorewood-Troy Library and the Three Rivers Library. She offers a number of tips for staying organized during the work hours, whether you work in an office or in your home. “If you’re actually in an office, have set times during the day when you are going to check it, but don’t check it first thing in the morning,” Randall said. She suggested checking it an hour …

What is Labor Day? Learn About the Holiday, and Get Help on Your Job Hunt

A history of the holiday from the U.S. Department of Labor, plus resources for Plainfield job-seekers.

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers. Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold." But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day …

Agree! I hope all of the brainwashed Fox News watching herd enjoyed their day off. From what I have seen the GOP has been waging war on the middle class and Unions in particular. Instead of being jealous of what Union employees have, people should be striving to organize for their own benefit.   more ›

Labor Day 2012 Closings

What better way to celebrate American workers than by taking a day off?

It's time to fire up the grill one last time and say good-bye to the dog days of summer. Though summer doesn't official end until Sept. 21, Labor Day — a national holiday dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers — is often thought of as the season's last hurrah. And many people — especially public employees — have the day off. Here's what's closed on and around Labor Day 2012:

Don't Drink and Drive: Police Plan Labor Day Crackdown

Plainfield, Will County police will conduct DUI and seat belt enforcements through the holiday.

For many people, it's the last hurrah of the summer, but police will be out in full force this Labor Day weekend making sure motorists don't put themselves and others at risk by overindulging in alcohol. Citing the "disproportionate number of traffic deaths involving alcohol and unbelted motorists," Will County Sheriff's police began a stepped-up late-night enforcement on Aug. 17, lasting through Labor Day on Sept. 3. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, midnight to 3 a.m. is the deadliest time on Illinois roadways — and is also the time of day with the highest percentage of alcohol involvement and lowest seat belt usage rate. "The numbers do not lie. We will be …

Why do they announce this? It doesn't keep the drunks off the road - it simply warns them to avoid that road. If you have a license and are not doing anything wrong this shouldn't bother anyone. Who cares if it generates $$ for the town as long as it saves one life or gets one unlicensed driver off the road the safety check is worth it.   more ›

No information was available as to why the license was pulled; owner Dale Lewis could not be reached for comment.

Downtown Lockport Street was jammed Friday night, with not a parking space to be had, but one business was not reaping the benefits of the Labor Day weekend. It was lights out at Finnegan's Irish Pub, 24102 Lockport St., which had its liquor license revoked by the State of Illinois Liquor Control Commission this week. The revocation is posted on the agency's Web site, but details are not provided as to why the license was pulled.
