Library Board Appoints New Trustees

Carl Gilmore, David Schmidt fill vacancies left after resignations of Mary Stevens and Mary Frances Wilkens.

Editor's note: The following is a press release issued by the Plainfield Public Library District. Carl F. Gilmore and David Schmidt were appointed by the Plainfield Public Library District Board of Trustees on Wednesday, September 19 to fill the vacant positions left by the resignations of Mary Stevens and Mary Frances Wilkens, for unrelated personal reasons, over the summer. The newly appointed trustees will serve in the unexpired terms through April 2013, when the seats will be up for election. The two candidates were interviewed at the regular meeting of the Board and appointed by unanimous votes. Gilmore is an instructor and administrator at Joliet Junior College. Nominating petition forms for the April 9, 2013 library board election in the Plainfield Public Library District will be available beginning Tuesday, Sept. 25, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Plainfield Public Library District’s Business Office, 15025 S. Illinois St., Plainfield, IL.   Completed petitions must be filed between Dec. 17 and 26 at the Plainfield Public Library District’s Business Office. Library Soliciting Public Input on Renovation, Expansion Plans

Saturday meeting is the first of four public forums at which six options will be presented as the "starting point" for discussion.

The Plainfield Library District’s population has gone up by 50,000 people since 1990, the year construction began on the Plainfield Public Library. In roughly the same 20-year period, the library’s collection of books, DVDs, CDs and other items has grown by 222 percent, the number of items checked out went up 845 percent and the number of questions answered by the reference desk has skyrocketed by 2,020 percent, library data shows. In other words, the library is no longer large enough to meet resident demand and officials need direction from the public on how to proceed, Director Julie Milavec said. Four open forums have been scheduled for this month to solicit input using six proposals as a place to start the conversation, Milavec said. …

The Naperville Public Library currently has 1,011 reciprocal borrowers registered from the Plainfield Public Library, with 2,158 items checked out by them at Naperville in November. That's 2.7% of the total cardholders in Plainfield.   more ›

Library Seeks Public Input to Plan Next 3 to 5 Years

Four strategic planning sessions with focus groups will help gather opinions to guide the library board on spending and services.

The Plainfield Public Library is putting together four volunteer focus groups to provide input on budgets and spending for the next three to five years. The four sessions are 7 p.m. Feb. 3, 10 a.m. Feb. 5, 7 p.m. Feb. 24 and 1 p.m. Feb. 26. The meetings are open to anyone who wants to attend and is willing to participate in strategic planning. Among the issues likely to come up will be the library's cramped conditions, which led to a recent change that allows patrons to take out books and other items for three weeks rather than in order to open up shelf space. The library board has been unsuccessful in past efforts to pass a tax increase referendum that would allow the current library to be expanded or a new facility built. The focus group…
