Three-time, all-Southwest Prairie Conference player setting sights on state
Plainfield South’s Matt Ward wasn’t satisfied with becoming the school’s first boys golf state qualifier a year ago. So, the three-time all-Southwest Prairie Conference player is aiming to win the first boys golf medal in District 202 history this year. He will get his chance during regional, sectional and state meets over the next two weeks. If you want to see a lot of emotion and pizzazz, don't follow Plainfield North's Nick Corban or Plainfield South's Matt Ward this weekend in the Class 3A state boys golf tournament at the Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington. There will be no fist pumping after a good put, jumping for joy after a solid shot or fits of rage after a bad turn of events. That's because the two Plainfield entries are not about flash and fire. Wildcats win second straight Southwest Prairie Conference championship.
LOCKPORT -- Just like during the league dual season, the Plainfield Central boys golf team was on its game in the Southwest Prairie Conference tournament Wednesday at Broken Arrow Golf Course. The Wildcats shot a 319 to win the tournament and the overall conference championship for the second year in a row. Plainfield Central went 7-0 during the dual season for the second consecuive year, as well. Nick Dylla and John Michalik fire 3-over-par rounds of 39 to lead the Wildcats past Plainfield South in dual at Wedgewood.
Plainfield South junior Matt Ward continued his assault on dual-match medalist performances. But it was Plainfield Central that prevailed in the crosstown rivalry Monday afternoon at Wedgewood Golf Course in Joliet. Ward, the Cougars' No. 1 player, converted a 15-foot birdie putt at the last to forge a 39 -- later duplicated by Central golfers Nick Dylla and John Michalik. Ward has captured low-round honors in three of the Cougars' matches, and Monday marked the fourth time he tied for low score.
