Mormon Church Receives Village Board's Blessing

An amended plan that keeps church traffic out of the neighboring White Pines subdivision was key to its passage.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints: Welcome to Plainfield. So pronounced Trustee James Racich Monday, moments after the Plainfield Village Board unanimously approved a site plan for the new 21,000-square-foot Mormon church on Ridge Road, south of 127th Street. Three weeks ago, the board heard from nearly a dozen Tall Pines subdivision residents who objected to church traffic being routed through their neighborhood. More than 40 other residents filled the village board chamber in opposition to the plan; an equal number of church members attended in support. The church’s entrance/exit through the subdivision was necessitated by village staff rejecting a full interchange at Ridge Road to accommodate church traffic. Ridge Road is one …

Grande Park Residents Fear Traffic from Proposed Mormon Church on Ridge Rd.

Village engineers have been directed to consider a full entrance/exit off Ridge Road that would prevent traffic from going through the subdivision.

Annexation and site plan approval for a new Mormon church were delayed for three weeks by the Plainfield Village Board Monday so concerns about traffic disturbing a neighboring subdivision can be resolved. Residents packed the village board room, half of whom were from the Tall Pines Homeowners Association in the Grande Park subdivision and more than 50 of whom were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. While concerned about the parking lot size and illumination from on-site light fixtures, residents were chiefly worried about traffic using their subdivision to enter and exit the church for the twice-Sunday services and other events at the five-acre, 21,000-square-foot building on Ridge Road near Grande Park Boulevard…

A few cars? Have you read the traffic study? There will be traffic on Wednesdays, Sundays, Easter, Christmas, church anniversary dates, weddings, and funerals. Not to mention two conference days during the year with approx. 800 parishioners expected to visit. There is only one two lane road nearby and the rest of them are narrow one lane streets. So unless you live in the neighborhood, don't …   more ›

Proposed Mormon Church Site Needs Village Annexation, Permit Approval

The project has been endorsed by the village plan commission and may go to the Plainfield Village Board on Monday.

A 21,000-square-foot Mormon church is to be built on Ridge Road, if the Plainfield Village Board gives its blessing to an annexation agreement, special use permit and final plan. The building will be located on a five-acre site south of 127th Street and north of 135th Street, Plainfield Village Planner Michael Garrigan said. It's being funded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, based in Salt Lake City. The church is expected to serve about 200 to 250 Mormon families in the Plainfield/Oswego/Aurora communities, Garrigan said. The nearest Mormon church right now is on 95th Street in Naperville, he said. The building will be a traditional church structure, Garrigan said. "Basically, there will be some ancillary facilities for …
